The fourth annual John Giorno Memorial 3-On-3 Basketball Tournament will be held Saturday, November 12, at Newtown High School.

The tournament is held in memory of John Giorno, a longtime friend of Newtown basketball who succumbed to cancer in 2002. All proceeds benefit the Giorno College Fund.

Competition is separated by age groups for both males and females. Age groups range from 8-9 years old through 30 and over. The format will be double elimination, so every team plays at least two games.  Trophies will be awarded for first- and second-place finishes in each division.

Each team should register four players.

Register up until the day of the tournament or through the Parks and Recreation Department, the athletic directors office at Newtown High School, or youth basketball coaches. All players will receive a commemorative t-shirt! The first 56 teams to sign up will be accepted (for youth teams, limit of two travel players per team).

When registering, remember payment must accompany registration. Each team must have a team name and three or four players. Players age is as of January 1, 2005. For the 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 age brackets captains must check in at 8 am to receive rules and team t-shirts and players should arrive by 8:15 am. Play begins at 8:30 am.

For remaining age brackets, captains must check in at 11:30 am to receive rules, schedule and team t-shirts. Players should arrive 30 minutes before game and play will begin at 12 noon (depending on number of teams).

Divisions will be 8-9, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15 and 16-19 for boys and girls and 20-29 and 30 and over for men and women. Fee is $90 per team.

A number of great prizes will be raffled throughout the day, including autographs, pictures, watches, basketball and baseball autographs and memorabilia, Pepsi© and Snapple © merchandise, sports bags, skateboards, clothing, college basketball merchandise from Fairfield, UConn, Iona, Rutgers, Providence, Boston University, Quinnipiac, free weeks at University of Boston Basketball camp, a free week at WCSU basketball camp, NHS basketball stuff and NHS Nighthawk banners.

A silent auction and knockout, free throw and half-court shooting contests will be held all day.

Anyone who would like to donate memorabilia or other sports items to the silent auction or raffles can contact John Quinn at quinn_john@sbcglobal.net.
