Variety In Times And Topics
Add Spice To Bibliophilesâ Lives
With the weather turning colder and the days shorter, fall is the perfect time to spend indoors with a good book ââ then to share opinions and questions with others who have read the same book.
Whether a book is loved or hated, the discussion that follows is always lively when attending any one of several CH Booth Library book groups, which meet once a month and are always open to new members.
The Nonfiction Daytime Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 1 pm and is organized by Howard Gorham. Participants enjoy reading and discussing a variety of topics including history, biography, science, and issues that are current in the news. In the past year, the Nonfiction Daytime Group read about globalization, the 1883 explosion of Krakatoa, Paul Revereâs role in the American Revolution, and the geology and politics of rising oil prices. The group will next meet on Tuesday, November 1, to discuss Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser.
The Classics and Literature Group is another daytime group. It meets the second Monday of the month, also at 1 pm. The subject is classics and great literature by award-winning authors. This past Monday, for example, the group discussed Jhumpa Lahiriâs novel The Namesake, and on November 14, they will be talking about Jane Austenâs Persuasion.
The Evening Book Group reads a variety of subjects including fiction, nonfiction, and biography, and meets the third Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm. On Thursday, October 20, at 7:30 pm, this group will discuss Stephen Dobynâs chilling novel Church of the Dead Girls, a book that Stephen King warns should be read âonly in a well-lit room surrounded by friends.â
There is no need to sign up ahead of time for any of these groups. Everyone is welcome to join at any time. Complete lists of what books each group is reading are available at the library and online at the libraryâs website: www.biblio.org/chbooth.
Copies of all books can be reserved through the library by going online, or by filling out a reserve card at the library. For information call 426-4533.
