DUI Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for his arrest, Peter Groonell, 38, of Monroe went to the police station on the afternoon of October 11 and was charged with driving under the influence.

Police said the arrest stems from an accident last March 2 on Meadow Brook Road. In that accident, Groonell was driving a 2001 Subaru Forester that went off the road and struck a utility pole and a tree, according to police. Groonell was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of  injuries after that March accident.

On October 11, police released Groonell on $50 bail for an October 25 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Hawleyville DUI

Motorist Denise Kavovit, 36, of New Milford was driving a 2004 Land Rover Discovery northward on Route 25 in Hawleyville about 1:26 am October 14, when she became distracted and drove off the right road shoulder, striking a tree, police report.

Kavovit received a cut on her arm, but declined medical attention, police said.

After investigating, police charged Kavovit with driving under the influence, making a restricted turn, and driving without a license. Police released her on $20 bail for an October 27 court appearance.

DUI Charge

Motorist James Monroe, 24, of 12 Parmalee Hill Road was seen driving a vehicle eastward on Church Hill Road about 10:30 pm October 8, without its headlamps illuminated, police report.

Police said they stopped Monroe near 20 Riverside Road to investigate, after which they gave him field sobriety tests and charged him with driving under the influence and failure to illuminate headlamps.

After processing, police released Monroe for an October 25 appearance in Danbury Superior Court.

Drug Arrest

Police said they stopped motorist Michael Forestieri, 20, of 8 Diamond Drive on Sugar Street, near Madison Drive, on the night of October 14, after noticing that the vehicle he was driving did not have its tail lamps illuminated.

Police said they saw a syringe in the vehicle, so they called in the police department’s dog to search the vehicle. The dog located some heroin in the vehicle, police said.

Police said they arrested Forestieri on charges of possession of narcotics, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

After processing, police released Forestieri on a written promise to appear in court on November 1.

Chevrolet Vs Volvo

A two-vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of Route 34 and Bennetts Bridge Road about 7:24 am October 11.

The collision involved motorist Kirsten Mawdsley, 36, of 29 Great Ring Road, who was driving a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban, and motorist Louise Mango, 53, of 3 Orange Pippin Road, who was driving a 2005 Volvo V-50, police report. There were no injuries. After investigating, police issued Mawdsley a written warning for making an improper turn.

Vehicular Violation

Police report that at about 3:16 pm October 2, they responded to an accident at the driveway entrance to 301 South Main Street in Botsford.

Police said David Rotunda, 17, of Monroe was driving a 2002 Tomos Revival motor scooter northward on South Main Street and was turning right into the driveway, when the vehicle entered a patch of sand and fell onto its right side.

Rotunda was transported to Danbury Hospital to be treated for injuries. Police issued Rotunda a written warning for illegal operation of a minibike on a public road.

Nissan Vs Jeep

An accident occurred at the intersection of Queen Street and Mile Hill Road about 3:49 pm October 15.

Southbound motorist Matthew Tyler Gerry, 18, of 14 Queen Street, who was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee, stopped at a stop sign at the southern end of Queen Street, after which southbound motorist Tanveer Khursheed Husain, 25, of Wethersfield, who was driving a 2005 Nissan Altima, stopped behind the Jeep, police said.

The Jeep pulled forward in preparing to make a turn onto Mile Hill Road, but then stopped, after which the Nissan struck the Jeep from behind, police said. There were no injuries. Police issued Husain a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Truck Hits Overpass

Jonathan Andrews, 24, of Broken Arrow, Okla., was driving a 2005 International box truck northward on Botsford Hill Road about 9:30 pm October 13, when the top of the truck struck the bottom of the low-clearance Housatonic Railroad overpass, police report.

Andrews was not injured. Police issued him a written warning for failure to obey posted low-clearance signs and markings.

Dodge Vs Honda

A two-vehicle collision occurred at the intersection of South Main Street and Mile Hill Road about 3:42 pm October 11.

Motorist Michael Frattalone, 60, of Shelton, who was driving a 2005 Dodge Dakota pickup truck, was turning left from southbound South Main Street onto eastbound Mile Hill Road, when he collided with motorist Michael Boroski, 26, of Naugatuck, who was turning right from northbound South Main Street onto eastbound Mile Hill Road, police said.

Police issued Frattalone an infraction ticket for failure to grant the right of way.

Interstate Collision

A truck and a sport-utility vehicle collided on westbound Interstate 84, near Exit 9, about 12:52 pm October 12, state police said.

In an area where there are three westbound travel lanes, motorist Silva Luciane, 29, of Danbury, who was driving a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, attempted to move from the right lane into the center lane, state police said. In making the maneuver, the Jeep did not yield to trucker Delbert Moore, 42, of Aurora, W.Va., who was driving a Kenworth truck in the center lane, resulting in a collision, according to state police.

There were no injuries. Luciane failed to grant the right of way, state police said.

Volvo Accident

Motorist Michael Scianna 18, of 12 Bridge End Farm Land was driving a 1997 Volvo 850 sedan northward on Tunnel Road and making a left turn onto Barnabas Road about 3 pm October 16, when the vehicle went out of control and struck guard cabling along the right road shoulder of Barnabas Road, police said.

Scianna was not injured. Police issued him an infraction ticket for making a restricted turn.

Volvo Vs Deer

Motorist Valerie Vuto, 19, of Monroe was driving a 1996 Volvo 850 sedan southward on Toddy Hill Road about 7:20 pm October 17, when a deer ran into the road in front of the auto, resulting in a collision, police said.

Vuto was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

Ansonia Man

Police said they stopped motorist Thomas Bennett, 53, of Ansonia on Mile Hill Road about 3 pm October 18 for not wearing a seatbelt. Police said they charged Bennett with failure to wear a seatbelt and with driving without automotive insurance. Police released Bennett on $50 bail for a November 1 court appearance.

Toyota Mishap

Motorist Nicholas Cartwright, 24, of Monroe was driving a 1997 Toyota Camry westward on Meadow Brook Road about 5 pm October 16, when his right front tire hit a pothole, causing the rim to crack and the tire to flatten, police report.

Police investigated the mishap. Cartwright was not injured. Police took no enforcement.

South Main Collision

About 8:12 am October 19, a two-car accident occurred on southbound South Main Street at its intersection with Simm Lane.

Southbound motorist Segundo Guaman, 27, of Danbury, who was driving a 1993 Ford Escort, came to a stop and was waiting to make a left turn onto Simm Lane, when the Ford was struck from behind by southbound motorist James Monroe, 24, of 12 Parmalee Hill Road, who was driving a 1995 Nissan Altima, police report.

There were no injuries. Police issued Monroe a written warning for traveling at an unreasonable distance. Police gave Guaman a misdemeanor summons for driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without a license, driving without automotive insurance, and misuse of marker plates. Police released Guaman on a promise to appear in court on November 2.

DUI Warrant

After learning that police held a warrant for her arrest, Kaitlyn Murphy, 20, of 16 Cobblestone Lane turned herself in at the police station on October 19, and was charged with driving under the influence in connection with an August 4 accident on Sugar Street (Route 302), according to police.

That late night, single-vehicle accident drew about 20 firefighters to the scene where they performed lengthy, complex vehicle extrications to remove two people who were trapped inside an overturned Honda Civic.

Police have said that Murphy was driving the Honda eastward on Sugar Street, on a flat straightaway lying about 1,000 feet west of the Meadowbrook Terrace Mobile Home Park, when for some reason, the vehicle climbed guardrailing along the right road shoulder, causing it to roll over onto its roof. The vehicle skidded to a stop upside down. Murphy had two passengers in the vehicle.

All three occupants were transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of injuries following the August 4 crash.

After processing her arrest on October 19, police released Murphy on a written promise to appear for arraignment November 2 in Danbury Superior Court.
