The Garden Club of Newtown will present a program titled “Discovering Moths: Nighttime Jewels in Your Own Backyard” on Tuesday, October 24, in the meeting room of C.H. Booth Library, 25 Main Street.

John Himmelman, a professional photographer and author who celebrates the vast array of beneficial species of moths with whom we share our yards and gardens, will be the speaker.

Using colorful photos, Himmelman explains the hundreds of different moth species that exist in Connecticut. Their presence may be unknown since they are active mainly at night.

He will share how to attract moths with lights and bait, when and where to observe them, and how best to photograph these tiny subjects.

Himmelman is the co-founder and president of CT Butterfly Association, past president of New Haven Bird Club, past president of The Nature Connection, and past president of Killingworth Land Trust. He has written and illustrated more than 75 books for adults and children on a wide variety of natural history subjects.

Copies of his books will be available for purchase and autographing following his presentation.

The program will begin at 1 pm, and will last approximately one hour.

All are welcome, free of charge. Registration is requested through the library; call 203-426-4533 or visit chboothlibrary.org.

The Garden Club of Newtown will host John Himmelman and his program “Discovering Moths: Nighttime Jewels in Your Own Backyard,” based on his book of the same name.
