A section of Edmond Road was closed for approximately seven hours last Friday afternoon after human remains were discovered.

Newtown Police blocked the road just north of the entrance to Pizza Palace and the drive for 73-75 Church Hill Road Plaza, and just south of Schoolhouse Hill Road at the northern end. It was closed from approximately 2:45 pm until sometime after 9 pm.

According to police, a caller to the Newtown Emergency Communications Center reported finding human remains in a wooded area off Edmond Road.

Police officers quickly responded to the area, met with the caller, and confirmed the presence of the remains.

At press time, Newtown Police are not identifying who the remains were, nor any other details regarding the age or condition of the remains, nor the cause of death.

Police did say the investigation “was not indicating any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances.”

Newtown Police worked with the Connecticut State Police Western District Major Crime Squad and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in investigating the remains.

Police said it is an ongoing investigation.
