Jack Mark McAuliffe, 82, former TWA captain and USN aviator, of Pinehurst, N.C., and formerly of Newtown, died October 18, at his home. He was born on November 28, 1934, in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Esther and Mark and McAuliffe.

Prior to retiring in Pinehurst, Mr McAuliffe lived in Newtown for 25 years. He served on the Planning and Zoning Committee; was elected second selectman for two terms; and was a member of the Legislative Council and Ordinance Committee. For his unselfish commitment and dedication to sports, Mr McAuliffe received the first Newtown Bee Sportsman Award for coaching basketball, baseball, and softball; initiating the basketball programs at St Rose School; as well as helping to create the town Recreational League.

Mr McAuliffe grew up in Harrisburg and Oakmont, Penn., graduating with a bachelor's degree in accounting from Duquesne University. At college, he was a walk-on player for the Duquesne basketball team that won the National Invitational Tournament.

He entered the Navy flight training program and earned his wings in June 1958. During his naval service, he was stationed at VR3 McGuire AFB flying MATS and at the Corpus Christi Naval Base as a flight instructor for VT-28. He also flew in Vietnam for the Naval Reserve. By the age of 25, he had traveled to all seven continents. After his military service, Mr McAuliffe flew as a captain for TWA for 27 years.

In Pinehurst, Mr McAuliffe served on the Civic Board. He volunteered at First Health Hospital and was a board member of MGA. He was an active member of the Association of Naval Aviators and was a member of Sacred Heart Church.

Mr McAuliffe's greatest joy in life was his love for his wife and family. He enjoyed golf, tennis, reading, traveling, politics, and the arts. He loved sports and was a loyal fan of the Fighting Irish and the Steeler Nation. His loved ones say he was a wonderful man with a true Irish sense of humor and that he will be remembered as intelligent, witty, dedicated, big-hearted, and man that lived his life with integrity.

His wife of 60 years, Lois McAuliffe; five children, Gary McAuliffe, Jean Hawkins and husband Joseph, Jill McAuliffe, Kathleen Young and husband Michael, and Suzie McAuliffe; twin brother, Thomas McAuliffe, and family; and seven grandchildren, Brenna, John, Grace, Joy, Jack, Caitlin, and Sean, survive him.

In addition to his parents, his brother Richard McAuliffe and sister, Phyllis Ferguson predeceased him.

A funeral mass will be conducted on Thursday, October 26, at 11 am, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Pinehurst, N.C., followed by a reception at the church hall. A burial will be conducted at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis TN 38105, or stjude.org.
