Richard Joseph Scanlon, 77, husband of Marianne (Kennedy) Scanlon, died October 18 at the Lutheran Home of Southbury, after a long illness. He was a resident of Newtown the last 45 years.
Mr Scanlon was born in Abington, Penn., on July 12, 1929, a son of John and Marie (Fitzpatrick) Scanlon. He graduated from Villanova University. While at Villanova, he was in the Naval Reserve and he served in the US Navy during the Korean War. After his discharge from the Navy, Mr Scanlon received an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania and later became a CPA.
Mr Scanlon was employed as chief financial officer at HeilCoil in Danbury, Bridgeport Machines in Bridgeport, and Raybestos in Milford. He was an avid coin collector but it was his continuing interest in Naval history that he devoted a great deal of time to throughout the years.
In addition to his wife of 50 years, he is survived by his son, Richard Scanlon and his wife, Julie, of St Petersburg, Fla.; two daughters, Judy Melanson and her husband, Peter, of Little Compton, R.I., and Lisa Scanlon of New York City; five grandchildren, Christopher Scanlon, Peter and Taylor Melanson, and Amy and John Miller. He is also survived by a sister, Sister Marie Scanlon; a sister-in-law, Joan Scanlon; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Saturday, October 21, in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown. There are no calling hours.
