Keep Political And Religious Pitches Out Of Halloween
Keep Political And Religious Pitches Out Of Halloween
To the Editor:
We are all aware of the negative feelings and press coverage related to this yearâs Labor Day Parade in reference to the campaigning by political candidates and their supporters. And, in light of the âgentlemenâs agreementâ between the political parties to refrain from putting political posters throughout Newtown, I would like to suggest that the political parties also remain silent on Halloween.
The celebration of Halloween on Main Street has become a wonderful community event. It is a great time for family fun and an escape from the real world. I challenge members of all political parties and their candidates to forget politics for one night and to either go trick-or-treating with their own families or give out candy at their own homes. Letâs remember that Halloween is for children.
Please do not decorate Main Street homes and businesses with political posters, display carved political jack-o-lanterns, or hand out political pamphlets. Also, in addition to political parties seeking votes I was very surprised to see a puppet show by a religious organization on town hall property last year. Letâs put Halloween in perspective; itâs really just a night to get away with dressing in silly costumes, have fun with friends and family, and eat lots of candy!
Letâs come together as a community and ignore politics and religion for just one night. As my mother always said, âOne shouldnât talk about politics or religion in public.â Not bad advice considering how divided our country has become on both fronts. Have a safe and enjoyable escape on Halloween!
Sincerely,
Oona Mulligan
