Footing Collapses At Town Hall South

By Steve Bigham

A portion of the front entrance of the Police Department collapsed Wednesday morning, sending town officials hurrying to the scene. No one was injured and the area is expected to be shored up by the end of the week.

According to Public Works Director Fred Hurley, a large concrete footing fell as workers dug curtain drains along the foundation of the building. The project is being done in the hopes that the drains will divert groundwater away from the basement. Contractors from JC Construction of Newtown were working on the building at the time of the accident.

“The thing let go. A piece of concrete that they thought was pinned to the building gave way,” Mr Hurley said.

Richard Marnicki, an engineering consultant for the town, was on the scene Wednesday and assured town officials that Town Hall South remained structurally sound.
