NMS 2012-13 Student Council Elected

By Eliza Hallabeck

Voters at Newtown Middle School have elected the 2012-13 Student Council members, following prepared speeches delivered before students on Friday, October 12.

Vying for the position of president were Jaden Albrecht, Connor Barrett, Aysha Hafiz, and Robert Hutchins. Contenders for the position of vice president were Michael Arther, Lucy Draper, Courtney MacDonald, and Constantine Vogiatzis. Trying for the position of treasurer were Ajene Arokium, Claire Beiter, Alex Ferris, and Isobel Russo. Students trying for the position of spokesperson were Kiera Jeffreys, Lexy Leidlein, Scott Preszler, and Hana Rosenthal.

Contenders each delivered a speech that explained who they are and how they would improve the NMS Student Council. The speeches marked the final round for the Student Council campaign. Each of the students had already worked hard in applying for their desired positioned and were interviewed by Student Council advisors Nadia Papalia and Tina Broccolo.

After multiple assemblies were held to allow each student at the school on Friday the chance to hear the students speak, students returned to their classrooms and voted for the 2011-12 Student Council representatives.

At the end of the day on Friday Ms Papalia announced this year’s Student Council officers: Robert Hutchins as president, Michael Arther as vice president, Claire Beiter as treasurer, and Hana Rosenthal as spokesperson.

When delivering his speech, Robert said he worked as the Student Council vice president last school year, and, “As president I will make myself more available to you.”

Crumpling up his speech, Robert threw the paper to the floor saying he was going to speak to his fellow students from his heart.

As an announcer for athletic games, Robert said he wants to promote the NMS student body as much as he promotes athletic teams.
