To the Editor:

In a time when Newtown is very divided, there are three Democratic candidates for Legislative Council who I truly believe have the ability to help reunite this town.

In District 1, Christopher Lyddy is an outstanding candidate seeking his first term. Chris grew up in Newtown and hopes to give something back to his hometown. He is already an active member of the Newtown community through Parent Connection, the Prevention Council, teaching religious education, and serving on the Juvenile Review Board. As a graduate of Newtown public schools, Chris knows how important a quality education is, and knows that every child in Newtown deserves this opportunity. As a young adult, he also knows the importance of affordability and creating a balance that works for everyone. Open-minded and hardworking are the best words to describe Chris. I cannot think of anything more important on the council. He is willing to listen to all sides, do the research, and work with others in order to find creative and reasonable solutions for our town.

Jan Brookes, District 3, is also seeking her first term on the Legislative Council. I first met Jan when I was a student at Newtown High School. I knew then that she is someone who cares about our world and strives to make a difference. She created the Conversation on Race class at Newtown High School when she taught there. This is only one example of Jan’s willingness to not just see the problems, but find a way to solve them. Having lived in Newtown for many years, teaching at the high school, and raising her kids here, Newtown is near and dear to her heart. Jan sees the Legislative Council as an opportunity to continue making a difference in Newtown.

Living in District 2, however, my vote will go to my dad, Joe Hemingway. Yes, I am voting for him because he’s my dad. That’s more than just a word, though. It’s the person he has been for my entire life that has earned my vote. My dad has served on the council previously, and I know that he enjoyed it. He loves the fact that he can make a difference in the lives of so many people. It’s something he has always done, and has taught me to do as well. My dad was always the first one to lend a helping hand with the new playground, paint the halls at the middle school, go on a work camp trip in 100-degree heat, coach a basketball team, run a swim team concession, or whatever else. He has been an active member of this Newtown community for as long as we’ve lived here.

All three of these people would make an outstanding addition to Newtown’s Legislative Council. If you don’t know what district you’re in, you can find out at www.thenewtowndemocrats.com. Once you know, I hope you will give serious consideration to whichever one of these dedicated candidates lives in your district.

Sincerely,

Sarah Hemingway
