On Friday, October 12, Newtown Middle School got into the spirit of fall politics. The Student Council officer elections were preceded by speeches from the candidates in the auditorium.
Student Council has three advisors: teachers Linda Dale Mulholland, Nadia Papalia, and Roseanne Beck.
Four students ran for the position of president: Ashley Cirone, Abbey Doski, Don Morrissey, and Michael Mossbarger. Vice presidential hopefuls were Erica Benoit, Zach Carfi, Josh Goldman, and Thomas Primavera.
Lisa Ferrari, Greg Frattaroli, Brandon Luxkaranayagam, and Katie Salaris were pursuing the position of treasurer.
Claire Olson was the only candidate for secretary. During the morning assemblies, when other candidates gave their campaign speeches, Claire delivered her acceptance speech.
Balloting occurred after all the candidates had spoken to the school population, who attended the speeches in the auditorium in three waves.
The officers for the 2007-2008 Student Council are: president, Michael Mossbarger; vice president, Josh Goldman; secretary, Claire Olson; and treasurer, Brandon Luxkaranayagam.
