To the Editor:

I am honored to add my voice in support of Kathryn Fetchick for Newtown Board of Education. Kathy is a young leader who has consistently proven her worth as a member of the Newtown Strategic Long-Range Planning Committee, PTA Council High School Space Needs Committee, and Republican Town Committee.

For the past two years she has faithfully attended Board of Education meetings and understands the role and complex responsibilities of a Newtown Board of Education member.

Her focus is on preserving and shaping the quality of Newtown’s public schools, without losing sight of the need to serve all children and their community in a fiscally responsible and informed manner.

Kathy Fetchick brings to the table a collaborative spirit, the courage to ask difficult questions, and the willingness to listen to the answers and make knowledgeable decisions.

Educational policy, by its very nature, must represent divergent populations and interests. Kathy’s gift is her ability to listen, prioritize the important issues, resolve conflict without rancor or personal attack, and move steadily forward. She is a positive and reflective thinker who will weigh all options and perspectives against the benchmark of children’s needs. She respects and values debate and encourages participation.

Talk to Kathy about what kind of educational system and community you want to see in five years. Share your visions, what needs to change or be improved upon and how will this be managed. You will quickly find that Kathy is a good listener with no motivation other than to help create outstanding educational opportunities for children.

The stakes are high and Newtown’s children deserve the best we can give them. Vote for Kathyrn Fetchick on November 6.
