Kids, Alcohol, And The Law: A Parent Connection Forum Planned For November 1

The Newtown Parent Connection will offering an informative forum, “Kids, Alcohol & the Law” Thursday, November 1, from 7 to 9 pm, at Newtown Middle School. The panel, facilitated by John Hamilton, the CEO of Behavioral Health, will address the many legal, neurological, and behavioral effects of underage and binge drinking and drug use.

Participants will have an opportunity to speak to the lawmakers and understand the ramifications of these difficult decisions that affect families and children of all ages and developmental stages. This forum will focus on the facts.

The perspectives are from professionals in the areas of neuropsychology, behavioral health, and law enforcement. Attendees will see and hear firsthand from people who are prominent in the state of Connecticut in their work dealing with underage alcohol and drug use.

Judge William Lavery, attorney Matthew Maddox, State Prosecutor Stephen Sedensky, Chief of Police Mike Kehoe, Dr Jonathan Michaelis, and Mr Hamilton will present invaluable information.

This program is opened to all who live, work, or have contact with children in any phase of life. All lives in a community are affected when even one of its members is involved in a substance-related tragedy. Fourteen young people in the general area have lost their lives to alcohol or drug related tragedies over the past 22 months.

The forum will address popular practices and answer questions about what the risks and liabilities are regarding the drinking habits of youth.

Middle school, high school, and college-aged children are urged to attend with their parents. Young people in attendance will be given a Community Involvement Certificate crediting them with devoting two hours of their time to strengthen their community. Newtown High School seniors will get senior health class credit.
