Failed To Look
On October 8, at about 12:34 pm, officers were called to a traffic collision on Hawleyville Road near Barnabas Road involving a 2005 GMC Envoy operated by Mark Baus, 41, of Main Street in Bridgewater. According to the report, the commercial vehicle, which was registered to Fairfield Equine Associates, failed to grant the right of way to the operator of a 1998 Honda Civic sedan that was turning from Hawleyville onto Barnabas Road.
Baus told police he failed to look right before proceeding into the traffic lane from the stop sign at Barnabas Road, and he was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign. No injuries were reported and the Honda was towed from the scene.
Improper Passing
Police issued a verbal warning for improper passing to William Kelly, 73, of Suzie Road, on October 8 at approximately 11:34 am. Kelly was operating a 2000 Lexus sedan southbound when the vehicle reportedly came in contact with the mud flap on a 1999 Freightliner tractor-trailer moving van that was lawfully backing up along Mt Pleasant Road.
Damage to the sedan was not sufficient to warrant a tow, and no injuries were reported.
Arrested At Courthouse
Mark Passero, 40, of Mt Pleasant Road, was arrested at Danbury Superior Court on October 9 while he was appearing on an unrelated matter. Passero, who is currently incarcerated at an Enfield correctional facility, was charged with larceny in the third degree related to a June 2006 incident where police say he is accused of stealing a vehicle from a Todds Road residence.
He was remanded back to the state marshals.
Passing On Right
Marlon J. Tate, 34, of Stamford was issued an infraction for passing on the right on October 9 at about 8:55 am, when the 1985 Mack dump truck he was driving south on South Main Street reportedly hit the right side and right hand mirror on a 2007 Honda Civic that police say was stopped, waiting to turn onto Guneva Drive. No injuries were reported.
Main Street Wreck
On October 10 at about 2:47 pm, police and Newtown Ambulance crews responded to a traffic collision on Main Street adjacent to Edmond Town Hall. Police said a northbound operator of a 2008 GMC truck was stopping to turn into a commercial driveway when it was struck from behind by a 2002 Ford Explorer driven by Joseph Torres, 61, of Dean Drive, Brookfield. Dean was subsequently charged with following too close. The driver of the GMC was transported to the hospital complaining of neck pain.
Verbal Warning
A 22-year-old Newtown operator was issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions at approximately 9:14 am October 10, after police responded to an accident call near 4 Walnut Tree Hill Road.
According to the report, the driver, Nathan Taylor of Old Farm Hill Road, was operating a 2004 Saturn Ion south at an excessive speed when he failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of the steering and slid off the road striking a utility pole. The vehicle was towed from the scene; no injuries were sustained by the driver.
Acura Vs Audi
At approximately 8:21 pm on October 11, State Police responded to a reported collision between a 2004 Acura TJX and a 2001 Audi A4 on the eastbound Exit 9 ramp from Interstate 84. Following a brief investigation, police issued a written warning for following too close to Christopher R. McCarthy, 27, of Bennetts Bridge Road in Sandy Hook, who reportedly failed to slow for traffic, hitting the Audi from behind and causing minor damage to both vehicles.
An Unhappy Birthday
A two-car collision October 11 at the Mobil gas station at Church Hill Road and the Interstate 84 ramp resulted in an injury to a 23-year-old Monroe resident on his birthday. The driver was operating a 1995 Jeep westbound on Church Hill Road attempting to turn into the business when his vehicle was hit by a 1997 Dodge pickup traveling eastbound in the right-hand passing lane attempting to enter the 84 eastbound on-ramp. That vehicle was operated by a Waterbury resident with three occupants on board. The Jeepâs operator sustained a laceration above his right eye and was transported to Danbury Hospital by local ambulance. The Jeep was towed from the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
Failed To Slow
James Baily, 49, of Advance, N.C., was operating his 2004 Honda Accord eastbound on Interstate 84 near Exit 9 around 6 pm October 12, when state police report he failed to slow for traffic, colliding with the rear of a 2007 Chrysler Sebring sedan. No charges were outlined in the report, and no injuries were sustained.
Sideswiped On Highway
On October 12 at approximately 7:47 pm, a Milford resident was traveling on Interstate 84 eastbound near Exit 9 when state police reported she was sideswiped by an unidentified vehicle which continued on without stopping. The incident resulted in minor damage to a 2006 Nissan Altima, and no injuries were sustained.
Operating Under Suspension
A Waterbury resident was arrested for operating under suspension October 12 at about 10 am, when police said the vehicle he was driving ran out of gas at Sugar Street near Head Oâ Meadow Road. Timothy Wilkes, 39, of Bradley Avenue was charged and issued an October 12 court date after which he was released on a $500 bond pending an October 12 court date.
Unknown Object Hit
On October 12 at about 8:27 pm, state police responded to a report of a Port Charlotte, Fla., driver hitting an unknown object on Interstate 84 eastbound near Exit 10. No object was subsequently located and the driver reportedly incurred slight damage to the front bumper of a 1998 Honda Accord.
Three-Car Chain
Bryan C. Smith, 32, of Plainville was cited for following too close after a three-vehicle collision on Interstate 84 eastbound at Exit 9, which occurred October 12 at about 2:48 pm. Smith, who also incurred a slight head injury, failed to stop his 2002 Mazda Protege in time for slowing traffic and collided with a 1995 Chevrolet Cavalier being operated by a 19-year-old Sandy Hook resident, which in turn was pushed into the rear of a 2003 Honda Odyssey being driven by a 36-year-old Southbury resident. The Mazda had to be towed from the scene, and Smith was cited for following too close.
Exit Ramp Crash
A 21-year-old operator from Ansonia was transported to the hospital on October 13 at about 1:20 am after she failed to stop for a blinking red light upon exiting Interstate 84 at Wasserman Way. Police said the 2006 Infiniti station wagon operated by Ashley Defillippo apparently drove through the intersection hitting a light pole opposite the exit. The vehicle was towed from the scene and the report remains open pending an investigation.
Failure To Stop
Fire and police responded to a motor vehicle collision at South Main Street and Blue Spruce Drive on October 13 just past midnight. According to the report, Richard Melycher, 21, of Newbury Road traveled through a stop sign onto South Main Street in a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup, colliding with a 1998 Kia Sephia sedan being operated by a Stratford resident.
Melycher was issued a misdemeanor summons on the charge of failure to obey a stop sign and operating without insurance. Both vehicles were towed; no injuries were reported.
Offender Allegedly Evaded
On October 13 at about 11:19 am, police charged a youthful offender with several traffic violations after the accused reportedly struck another vehicle from behind and failed to remain at the scene. Following a complaint, police reported discovering the vehicle in question, a red Ford Contour sedan, at the home of the accused with evident front-end damage.
The accused was unable to provide a current insurance card for the vehicle and was subsequently charged with evading responsibility, failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, and failure to carry registration or an insurance card. The offender, who is under age 18, posted a $100 bond after processing and was issued an October 26 court date.
Local Driver Warned
Police reported that two vehicles were involved in a slight collision on October 13 at about 8 pm at the intersection of Glover Avenue and Main Street. The report reflects that a 1999 Jeep Cherokee being operated by Tyler Lones, 17, of Karen Boulevard rolled into the rear of a 2005 Honda Pilot SUV that had stopped westbound Glover Avenue, rolled slightly forward, and stopping again for the red light at Main Street. Lones was issued a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Slick Roadway
A Milford resident was cited for traveling too fast for conditions at about 10 am on October 8, when police say Gary Werda struck the rear of a vehicle stopping to turn into Prospect Drive. Werda told police he was operating a 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier sedan on wet surface when he attempted to stop for the 2007 GMC Envoy in front of him, skidding approximately 40 feet prior to the collision. No injuries were reported.
Minor Collision
On October 14 at about 2:13 pm, police say Thomas Pundy of Riverside Road was pulling from his driveway onto the roadway when his 1993 Jeep Eagle station wagon collided with the side of an eastbound 1993 Cadillac Seville being driven by a Monroe resident. Minor damage to both vehicles resulted and Pundy was issued an infraction for failure to grant the right of way. No injuries were reported.
Sugar Street DUI
A Pootatuck Trail resident was arrested for operating under the influence and failure to drive right following a report of an erratic operator October 14 at about 9 pm in the area of Sugar Street.
Police observed a 2002 Hyundai Elantra driving unusually slow eastbound and crossing over the center line. After a brief investigation police charged Denise Jurasek, 47, and released her after processing on a $125 cash bond pending an October 30 court appearance.
Camry Was Towed
State police report a 2002 Toyota Camry had to be towed from the scene of a rear-end collision near Exit 9 of westbound Interstate 84, on October 14 at about 6:15 pm.
According to the report, Zeren Wang, 48, of Southbury failed to stop for slowing traffic and hit a 2006 Honda Pilot SUV operated by a West Holyoke, Mass., operator. No injuries were reported and the report did not reflect any action against either driver.
Spray Paint Incident
Police arrested two youthful offenders for criminal mischief in the second degree at about 7:30 pm on October 15, after a Newtown officer on patrol witnessed the juveniles spray painting a wall at 75 Glen Road.
After processing, the two individuals were released on written promises to appear in court October 29.
Charged On Warrant
On October 15 at approximately 4:15 pm, Bonnie Miller, 41, of Norwalk turned herself in to Newtown Police after learning of an outstanding warrant against her for issuing a bad check. After processing, Miller was issued an October 30 court date.
Deer Caused Damage
A Lovells Lane resident reported striking a deer at 63 South Main Street at about 6:48 am on October 16. The 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup sustained damage to the front left side. It was not clear if the deer was already hit in the roadway or moving across the roadway causing the damage.
South Main Crash
On October 16 at about 10:55 am, police charged Anna Wojcik, 57, of Bridgeport with following too closely in her 1994 Honda Accord, after she reportedly struck the rear of a 2000 Chevrolet Astro van that had stopped on South Main Street attempting to turn into Laurel Road.
The Honda was towed from the scene and no injuries were reported.
Honda Vs Honda
State police report a Waterbury operator was cited for following too close and failure to carry insurance on his 1992 Honda Accord following a rear-end collision on October 17 at about 8:14 am on Interstate 84 westbound near Exit 10. The driver, Garfield Bjorn, 21, failed to stop for slowing traffic and collided with a 2003 Honda Civic being driven by a Thomaston resident. No injuries were reported.
