NEW PALTZ SHOW SUCCESSFUL/ W 18 CUTS

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After more than a half year of an advertising blitz to establish the new Antiques at the Ulster County Fairground show, Cord Shows Ltd. announced that the weekend went off without a hitch on October 2 and 3. More than sixty dealers had ample booths on the lawn, indoors and under the Cattle Pavilion. Staffing the entrance with great enthusiasm was the committee of the Elting Memorial Library with Ron Kupin greeting each visitor personally as he helped them cross the street. “Everything felt just right for this weekend,” noted Vivien Cord.  “We worked well with the sponsor; the director and the staff at the fairgrounds got involved and presented a center-piece of a vintage tractor and hay wagon covered with a fall harvest of pumpkins; the public turned out 3,000 strong and did plenty of buying; and the dealers had the confidence to try a first-time show. All shared our excitement for this brand new event and all were rewarded!”

There was a long line for opening and customers came right up until closing time. One of the first items was a very large model of a wall paper store. It clearly showed its age and was constructed not unlike its full-size counterpart. Black Bear Mt. Depot of South Nyack, NY, specialized in railroad memorabilia exclusively. He had a spectacular show selling ten railroad lanterns to one customer who had plans of hanging them all around a swimming pool. Each lantern was from a different railroad.

“The show maintained the flavor of a true Cord Show in that it had a large variety of interesting merchandise at fair prices,” said Ed McClure. “One of the benefits of going to a new area is that different dealers become involved.” Charles Rogers (Judson Creek Antiques) of Oxford, NY, had a large offering of very interesting furniture and decorative accessories in his spot under the roof of the Cattle Barn. He had everything from a primitive pie safe to a wooden baseball bat holder and a folk art floor lamp made by a marble collector who used early marbles to form the shade. Rogers was one of the many dealers who reported having a very good show.

Next year, trying to be consistent, the show will be on September 30 through Oct 1. Due to the Jewish New Year on the 30th, a section will be made available to dealers who can only do the show on Sunday. The conflict with the holidays will not occur again for many years to come; thus the show will always remain on the weekend just subsequent to the Rhinebeck Show and Columbus Day weekend.
