89ers

NEWTOWN 20, ASPETUCK 6: The 89ers pushed their season record to 4-2 with a win over Aspetuck.

The game started off well, with Zach Conger recovering a fumble on Aspetuck’s first play from scrimmage. The offense then went to work and didn’t stop until Kris Kling scored the touchdown and Mark Scheunemann added the extra point.

Aspetuck fumbled again on its next possession and Daniel DeLaVega and Andrew Matsis came up with the recovery. Once again, the 89ers marched down the field with Scheunemann scoring on a 40-yard gallop. Kling added the extra point as Newtown led 14-0.

In the fourth quarter, Kling scored his second touchdown on another long run – this time 30 yards. The extra point was no good and the 89ers held a comfortable 20-0 lead.

Last week’s offensive star, Justin McGrath, had a shining moment on defense this week with a touchdown-saving tackle on a long Wildcat run. Soon after, Matsis recovered the third Aspetuck fumble at the one-yard line.

Josh Friedman, Matthew Mascolo, Justin Craparo, Travis Dachenhausen, Zach Gordon and Cody Kellogg had good games.

Junior Pee Wees

NEWTOWN 23, ASPETUCK 6: The Junior Pee Wees raised their season record to 5-2 with an easy win over Aspetuck.

Aspetuck went to the no huddle offense right from the start, but Newtown wasn’t fooled and forced the opponents to turn the ball over after just four plays. On offense, Newtown methodically moved the ball – mixing in the running of Joey DeVellis, Tom Hutchison and Tucker Kass with the aerial attack of Drew Adamek to Nick Maurer. Kass scored the initial touchdown and DeVellis added the extra point.

Aspetuck fumbled on its next possession. Taking over, Kyle Ekstrom – behind the blocking of Chris Elias, Tim Shepard, and Dave DeVaVega – moved the ball. Although Newtown lost the ball on downs, a sack of the Aspetuck QB by Brian Stickles gave the ball right back to the Junior Pee Wees.

The two teams then traded fumbles and Newtown finally held on to the ball. DeVellis scored the second Newtown touchdown and, with Kass adding the extra point behind the blocking of Mike Laux, theJPWs had a 14-0 lead.

Jake Benson intercepted a pass late in the first half and Tyler Tarantino, Ricky Lindeborn, Mike Shannon, Dave Carrubba and Brian Poetl had the offense moving again before time ran out. In the second half, Poetl came up with an interception, but the Newtown offense was again unable to get into the end zone.

It came down to defense.

The Junior Pee Wees pushed Aspectuck back until it was forced to give up a safety, putting Newtown further in the lead, 16-0. On the ensuing kickoff, DeVellis ran the ball in for a TD – only to have it called back due to a penalty. Nevertheless, the JPWs worked the ball back down the field as Kass ran in for the touchdown and the extra point, putting Newtown ahead 23-0.

Aspetuck scored its only touchdown with just a few moments left to play.

Newtown will close out its regular season on Saturday at Ridgefield.

Pee Wees

PEE WEES 18, ASPETUCK 0: The Pee Wees were in complete command last week as the defense completely stifled Aspetuck, allowing no first downs, while the offense came up with three touchdowns to win.

Inside linebacker Gary Andrews put a lot of pressure on the Aspetuck quarterback while the tackles – Ryan Delrossi and Matt Berquist – plugged the holes that opened up in the line. Defensive end Chuck Haberkorn shut down the outside.

The offensive line was the key to the Newtown success, too. Guard Seth Moberg and offensive tackle TJ Mueller gave quarterbacks Kevin Wasicki and Jake Putnicki time to work the plays. Grant Speer scored the first touchdown and RJ Marus scored another on a reverse from Roy Scheunemann. Lyle Murphy added the final score on a one-yard plunge.

Junior Midgets

NEWTOWN 14, ASPETUCK 0: Despite playing without several key players last weekend, the Junior Midgets were able to change things around a bit and come away from Aspetuck with a 14-0 victory.

The defense – led by Adam Seferi and Brett Eastman – took over right away and stifled Aspetuck. On offense, the Junior Midgets needed just two plays to hit paydirt. After a four-yard gain on the first play, quarterback CJ Maurer hit Jimmy Dietter with a pass that turned into a 66-yard touchdown and a 6-0 Newtown lead.

For the remainder of the first half, the Newtown defense took over and played its best game of the season. Seferi provided several sacks of the quarterback at key points to stall Aspetuck drives. Matt Selezan and Jesse Goodwick each picked off passes and late in the second quarter Selezan came up with a blocked punt. The punt was recovered in the end zone by the Wildcats, but Tim Sykes made the tackle for the safety.

Midway through the second half, the Junior Midgets would strike again – this time on the ground. Behind some great outside blocking by Chris Body and Sean Reilly, Dietter was able to get outside for a 60-yard TD.

The defense of John Kostecki, Bobby Pattison, AJ Craparo and Eastman dominated the game. The offensive line of Keith Gotthardt, Scott Regnery and Kevin Regan gave the offense time to work as Maurer was able to connect on nine passes for more than 150 yards (Dietter grabbed four of those himself for 95 yards while Body, Aadil Ansari and Jeff Bell had one grab each).

Midgets

MIDGETS 6, ASPETUCK 6: From the outset, the offensive line of JD McGrath, TJ Powell, Mike Conroy and Josh Rouse opened large holes that allowed for strong off-tackle running by Jake Elias. The inside running game set up sweeps and two big reverses by Kyle Hastedt that led to John Dietter’s fake reverse that went 70 yards for the only touchdown of the game.

The defensive line play of Kyle Uniacke, Joey Feola, Powell and Kevin Woessner halted Aspetuck’s inside running game and defensive ends Matt Wheeler and Rouse shut down the outside, as well. Linebackers Colin Curran, Billy Schueschner and Pat Coakley pressured the quarterback while Dave Wesley and Brian McDonald were solid at the corners.

The defense was holding solid when, with two minutes left in the game, Aspetuck rushed past a blitzing offense to scamper in for the tying touchdown. Newtown came up with a block on the point-after, though, to secure the 6-6 tie.
