Newtown’s third annual Walk 4 Water will be take place Sunday, October 19, at Fairfield Hills, from 10 am to noon. Meet at Keating Farms Avenue.

All ages are invited to participate in a three-mile walk simulating the daily trip African families must make to retrieve water. On the last half of the walk, participants will be carrying four liters of water, experiencing what those families feel, once they have picked up water and need to return with it to their homes.

Participants will be given the opportunity to experience water poverty while raising funds for the 501(c)(3) human rights organization that plans and fund water access projects, such as digging wells, for those who do not have access to clean water.

More than 10 percent of the world’s population lacks access to safe drinking water. According to volunteers for Walk 4 Water, $20 can provide one person with water for the rest of his or her life. There is no charge to participate. Donations will be accepted, with all proceeds going to water access projects. Participants should bring their own water to carry.

Team pledge forms are available for those who want to fundraise as a group. Additional information is available from Laura Brennan (bennanla@hotmail.com) or Karen Sepp (han2char@gmail.com), as well as at digdeepwater.org.

Also on Sunday, Newtown’s annual CROP Walk (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) will take place at Fairfield Hills. Church World Service (CWS), the group hosting the annual walk, is focusing this year on the worldwide need for fresh water.

Participants are being reminded of the importance of fresh water, and the need for it for drinking, bathing, preparing meals, or watering gardens or livestock. The walks help CWS determine the best solutions to these challenges. Livestock to start a farm, tools or seeds to help keep a family fed and healthy, or a sand dam to help provide water are a few of the solutions offered through CWS.

Walkers are asked to raise pledges, or to make a donation on their own behalves. Registrations will still be accepted on Sunday afternoon. Final registrations will begin at 1:30 pm, and all walkers should be at the NYA Sports & Fitness Center at Fairfield Hills by 2 pm.

The first of two walking events at Fairfield Hills on Sunday will raise funds for and awareness of those who experience water poverty.
