Workshop At Fraser-Woods School

A hands-on workshop for parents, educators, and anyone interested in developing observational skills through art appreciation will be held at The Fraser-Woods School October 18, from 10 am until 1:30 pm, and October 20, from 9:30 am until 2 pm. The school is at 173 South Main Street.

The art galleries will be open at the school for the participants to learn the fundamental elements of artistic expression and to learn to apply these to both master and contemporary works as a way of understanding an artist’s intent.

The same skills are taught to students at the school through the Art Humanities program as part of the middle school curriculum at the school. Examples from the Art Humanities program will be used to illustrate observational and interpretive skills.

On view in the galleries, as part of a celebration for the year’s theme “The Year of Art,” aluminum sculptures by Jodi Carlson and emotional pop culture paintings by Adam Kaplan. Ms Carlson is a contemporary artist from Putnam County, N.Y., who incorporates recycled metal into her whimsical, large-scale works. Mr Kaplan, a Connecticut painter, uses the venue of cartoonlike subjects to explore the emotions inherent in the human condition.

The workshop will be presented by Christine Mitchell, MA, art instructor at The Fraser-Woods School. Ms Mitchell worked for more than 20 years as an art therapist and educator, and taught in the galleries of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the New Britain Museum of American Art, in New Britain.

For more information or to register for the event call The Fraser-Woods School Art Studio at 426-3390, extension 312.
