Avid Animal Lover

Barbara A. Lewis, 74, mother of Jeffrey S. Metzger, MD, of Newtown, died on Friday, October 10, at Danbury Hospital.

Mrs Lewis, a resident of Silver Spring, Md., was born Barbara A. Hance in Brewster, N.Y., on September 25, 1934, to Albert B. and Katherine (Smith) Hance. Raised in Schenectady, N.Y., she attended local schools and was a graduate of Mt Pleasant High School and Spencer’s Business College.

Prior to moving to Gaithersburg and later Damascus, Md., Mrs Lewis was employed at the Knowles’ Atomic Power Plant.

A resident of Silver Spring for the past 18 years, she was employed with the Horizon Surgical Group of Silver Spring as a surgical scheduler prior to her retirement.

An animal lover, especially felines, she supported humane efforts for animal protection. She was involved in various walks for many support services, including Walk for Life, as well as being an avid Washington Redskin fan.

In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, Nancy Metzger, Mrs Lewis is also survived by an additional son, Scott D. Metzger and his wife Gerri, two daughters; Cindy M. Fazendin and her husband Rick and Lori Kraus and her husband Doug; a brother, Albert “Skip” Hance and his wife Nancy; a sister, Shirley Loughran of New York state, and eight grandchildren: Dana, Ali, Derrick, Brittany, Daniel, Sammi, Whitney, and Ellie.

She was predeceased by her husband, Eugene Lewis.

Mrs Lewis also leaves behind her cat, Fuzzy Tail.

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home in Silver Spring, Md. The family received friends at the funeral home at the time of service. Interment will be private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Regional Hospice, Home Care Program, 405 Main Street, Danbury CT 06810, or The National Humane Society, 40 E. Main St., Newark DE 19711.

Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Avenue in Danbury, was in charge of local arrangements.
