Yale Whiffenpoofs

In Ridgefield, Sunday

RIDGEFIELD — On Sunday, October 22, at 4 pm, the Whiffenpoofs of Yale University will perform a concert at St Stephen’s Episcopal Church. Admission to the one-hour concert is free, although donations will be welcomed.

Founded in 1909, the Whiffenpoofs represent the oldest collegiate a cappella singing group in America. Each year, 14 senior Yale men are selected for the outstanding vocal ability to continue the Whiffenpoof tradition.

Some of the most important figures in American music have been associated with the Whiffenpoofs. Cole Porter (Yale, Class of 1913) was a Whiffenpoof, Ella Fitzgerald was made an honorary member of the group during a 1979 concert, and Louis Armstrong recorded his own original version of “The Whiffenpoof Song.”

The Whiffenpoofs present a wide and varied repertoire ranging from fast jazz (“Too Darn Hot”) to melodic ballads (“Black is the Color of My True Love’s Hair”), from musical theatre (“On Broadway”) to blues (“Midnight Train to Georgia”). Works by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Stephen Sondheim have all been arranged and performed by past and present members of the Whiffenpoofs.

St Stephen’s Church is at 351 Main Street/Route 35. Call 203/438-3789 for additional information.
