Girl Scouts of Newtown announced it has three new Kindergarten Daisy Troops being added to the Service Unit this fall.

All troops boast a roster of experienced leaders. In light of COVID-19 concerns, there are many safe ways to become a Girl Scout and get involved right now, according to a release.

Girl Scouts of Newtown will host an outdoor Open House at Fairfield Hills this Sunday, October 18, at 1 pm. The Service Unit will have a sign-up table under the pavilion near the baseball fields on Mile Hill South Road. Girls and parents may sign up and get more information on joining as Girl Scouts, co-leaders, or troop volunteers. Girl Scouts will be on hand to talk about the program and share some Girl Scout traditions. Girls will earn their first patch that day.

Girl Scouts of Connecticut is offering a wide array of virtual programs for all age groups. Girls in kindergarten to third grade are welcome to take part in two online weekly offerings: the Animal Dance Party and Build a Robot Party, taking place from 5 pm to 5:30 pm on Wednesday evenings. These events are for non-members and will introduce girls to the Girl Scout program and allow them to register to be part of a troop. A virtual multilevel troop option is offered to girls from kindergarten to third grade as well, for families seeking a virtual program right now.

Girls in sixth to twelfth grade who are interested in astronomy can join Girl Scouts Astronomy Troop 67222. Existing Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors can join as a secondary troop and still remain in their traditional troops. This troop will begin by meeting monthly via Zoom, with hands-on activities and possible field trips during the year.

Older girls can also join an Outdoor Adventure Troop, which meets virtually each month to plan and take outdoor excursions. The troop recently enjoyed an Adirondack backpacking overnight trip weekend.

To find out more about these opportunities and to sign up for programs, e-mail Service Unit Managers Maria Konitshek and Heather Smith at newtownsuteam@gmail.com or call Girl Scouts of Connecticut at 800-922-2770.

Girls Scouts Taegan Smith of Ambassador Troop 50293, and Tori Orawsky of Junior Troop 50764 enjoy Newtown Camporee at Camp Candlewood in 2019.
