Volleyball Team Gets On Winning Streak
Newtown High School’s girls’ volleyball team won its sixth straight match on October 15, defeating host Immaculate of Danbury 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-11).
Kyle Dandrea had seven kills and four digs, Alexa Reilly added four kills, and Sarah Bender had 17 assists and five aces.
The Nighthawks defeated host Bethel 3-1 (25-16, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13) a day earlier.
Dandrea had 14 kills and three digs, Molly McCoy had 30 assists and five kills, and Tessa Leon-Gambetta had seven digs.
The Nighthawks beat visiting Bunnell of Stratford 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-18) on October 10. Dandrea came up with 16 kills and 13 digs, Clara Whaley had seven kills and five blocks, and Jamie Calandro compiled six kills, five aces, and 13 digs.
In its previous match, two days earlier, Newtown won 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 26-28, 25-23) at Pomperaug of Southbury. Dandrea had 17 kills and eight digs, McCoy tallied 25 assists, eight kills, six aces, and five digs, and Calandro recorded eight aces and seven digs.
Newtown had beaten Stratford 3-0 and Weston 3-1 in its two previous matches. After the Immaculate clash, the Nighthawks end the regular slate with three straight home matches. After the Barlow match, Notre Dame-Fairfield comes to town on Tuesday, October 21 for a 6:30 pm meeting, and East Lyme visits at 5:30 pm on Friday, October 24 for a 5:30 pm start.
The Hawks trail only Masuk of Monroe (9-1), Barlow (8-1), and Weston (8-2) in the South-West Conference standings.
