Swim Squad Beats Bunnell Of Stratford, Improves To 8-1

Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team topped visiting Bunnell of Stratford, 96-74 on October 14. The Nighthawks cruised to first-place finishes early on in the meet before coasting to the triumph. Newtown improved to 8-1.

The Nighthawks jumped to the early lead as the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Meg Olszewski, Annika Fagerholm, Megan McDonald, and Amy Martinelli finished first in a time of 2:06.82.

In the 200 freestyle race, Eliza Eggleston was first in 2:06.75. The 200 individual medley race was won by Emma Brantl who made her final touch in a time of 2:34.31. McDonald took the top spot in the 50 free in a time of 27.30.

The diving break featured a one-two-three Newtown finish led by Kari Djonne, Gillian Eckwall, and Emma Wolfman, respectively.

Newtown has one regular-season meet remaining, an October 21 visit from Masuk of Monroe at 7 pm. The South-West Conference championships are scheduled for Wednesday October 29 (diving, 5:30 pm at Pomperaug High in Southbury) and November 1 (swimming, 1 pm at Masuk).
