Police Reports, October 1-14, 2014
Juvenile Altercation
Newtown Police responded to a Huntington Road location on October 1 at about 7:50 pm after receiving a report of a physical altercation. Upon arrival, police say they arrested a juvenile for disorderly conduct. The individual was subsequently released to a parent with a juvenile court date of October 20.
Unsafe Passing
After receiving a call about a motor vehicle crash at about 5:32 pm October 3, police responded to Mile Hill Road where they determined both drivers involved were at fault. One unidentified operator was traveling eastbound and was engaged in a left turn, when a second vehicle traveling westbound passed a third stopped vehicle on the right striking the turning vehicle. The first operator was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way, and the second operator received a verbal warning for unsafe passing on the right. Police provided no further details or identification of the drivers.
South Main Crash
Police and local ambulance volunteers responded to a reported two-vehicle crash October 4 at about 10:06 am at the intersection of South Main Street and Pecks Lane. Upon arrival police determined that Tammy Lee Hartman, 45, of Southbury, was operating a 2006 Chevrolet van southbound. When she attempted to turn into Pecks Lane, the Chevrolet was struck from behind by a 2003 Jeep Liberty being operated by Frederick Ferris, 47, of Robin Hill Road. The Jeep received damage to the extent it had to be towed, and ambulance personnel evaluated at least one occupant who sustained minor injuries. Ferris was issued a written warning for following too close.
Weapon, Drugs Found
On October 5 at about 5:58 pm, police report stopping a vehicle on Sugar Street being operated by Henry Anthony, 21, of Plumtrees Road, Bethel, after he was observed traveling 54 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone. After a brief investigation, police arrested Anthony for possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, possession of less than one-half ounce of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, traveling too fast, and failure to carry an insurance card. He was processed and subsequently released on a $1,000 nonsurety bond pending an October 21 court date.
Private Property Collisions
Police responded to two private property collisions within two hours on October 7. The first occurred at about 3:40 pm at the Citgo gas station on Church Hill Road, when Laura Kurtz, 49, of Diamond Drive pulled in to the eastbound service lane in her 2008 Ford Fusion. At that time, police say Sazful Islam, 19, who was already waiting for service operating a 2012 Honda Civic, attempted to back up striking the front of the Ford. No injuries were reported and no action was taken. Then at about 5:39 pm, officers were called to the rear of Reed Intermediate School, where they discovered Fred Manfredonia, 73, of Southbury, who was operating a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, had struck an adjacent parked 2014 Honda Odyssey van causing minor damage. No injuries resulted and no enforcement action resulted.
Rollover Crash
Following a report of a crash October 7 at about 4:51 am, police responded to South Main Street at Greenbriar Lane, and discovered a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee that was being operated by Guaman Mano, 25, of Littlebrook Lane. Police say the driver reported losing control of the vehicle as he was traveling northbound, going into a drainage ditch where the Jeep rolled over. No injuries were reported and the operator received a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Toddy Hill Road
On October 8 at about 7:48 pm, police were called to the intersection of Toddy Hill and Buttonshop Roads. Upon arrival and a brief investigation, officers determined John G. Lewis 52, was operating a 2010 GMC Terrain northbound attempting to turn left onto Buttonshop Road. At the same time, Laura Miller, 46, of Osborne Hill Road was operating a 2006 Lexus GX70 attempting to turn from Buttonshop onto Toddy Hill Road when she made contact with the GMC. Minor damage occurred to both vehicles and they were drivable. No injuries were reported. Miller was issued an infraction for failure to grant the right of way at a stop sign.
Postal Vehicle Hit
Police were called to Main Street at about 1:04 pm on October 11 after a reported minor collision. Upon arriving at the scene police determined Daniel Sailer, 47, was traveling northbound operating a 2012 Nissan Versa, alongside a US Postal vehicle, when he turned right and contacted the service vehicle. Minor damage occurred but no injuries were reported. Sailer was issued a written warning for making a restricted turn.
Responding To Warrant
On October 14, Taylor M. Taylor, 19, of Shelton appeared at the Newtown Police Headquarters to turn himself in after learning of an outstanding warrant resulting from an August 8 larceny charge following an incident at the South Main Street GNC retail store. He was processed on the charge of Larceny in the sixth degree and was released on a written promise to appear in court on October 28.
Highway Evading
State Police responded to a report of a crash on Interstate 84 on October 10 at about 3:12 pm, in the area east of Exit 11. Upon arrival, Troopers determined Jeanette Acosta, 41, of Waterbury was operating westbound in a 2005 Honda CR-V when she was struck on the right side by another, unidentified vehicle that police say fled the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
Ramp Spinout
Troopers were called to the eastbound Exit 10 on ramp at about 1:39 pm on October 11 after a reported spinout collision. Upon arriving they determined that Orlando Natal, 53, of Danbury was operating a 2000 Ford Ranger when the vehicle lost control and spun out knocking down a metal guidewire post. No injuries were reported and the vehicle was drivable from the scene.
Light Posts Damaged
State Police say Frank Luciani, 58, of Danbury was traveling east on Interstate 84 in the area of Exit 11 on October 12 at about 3:54 am, operating a 201 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The operator stated he lost control of his vehicle striking two illumination poles on the right shoulder. No injuries were reported, but the vehicle had to be towed from the scene. Luciani was issued a citation for failure to maintain a lane.
Rear Ender
On October 13 at about 1:31 pm, State Police responded to a reported two vehicle collision on the I-84 off ramp at Exit 11. Upon arrival they determined a 2006 Ford Freestyle being operated by Benjamin Ryan Murphy, 22, of Fir Tree lane, Sandy Hook was stopped waiting to turn onto Wasserman way, when he was struck from behind by a 2012 Nissan NV being operated by Angel Vera, 26,of Stamford. Both vehicles sustained minor damage, but neither drivers or their passengers reported injuries. Vera was issued an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.
Valuables Taken
Newtown Police report that during the overnight period between October 13 and 14 in the area of Susan Lane, numerous valuables were taken from an unlocked, parked vehicle at a residence. Police remind residents to lock their vehicles at night, and refrain from leaving valuables in sight if they must be located in a parked vehicle. Minor Scratches
Police report that a minor collision at the intersection of Wasserman Way and Berkshire Road on October 12 at about 12:22 pm caused minor damage to one vehicle involved. According to the report, police say Andrea Arlene Savegh, 20, of Goodyear Road in Sandy Hook was operating a 2001 Honda Accord at the traffic light on Wasserman Way when the vehicle rolled into the rear of a 2007 Porsche Boxster being operated by Paul M. Garofalo, Jr, 56, of Southbury, causing rear bumper scratches. The investigating officer issued Savegh a written warning for following too closely.
Hit From Behind
At about 8:08 am on October 14, Police say Yvette Lee, 55, of Danbury was operating a 2008 Hyundai Elantra westbound on Berkshire Road when she failed to stop, and struck the rear of a 2007 Kia Sportage SUV operated by Cynthia Hessler, 64, of Derby, who had stopped for a school bus discharging students. No injuries were reported and both vehicles were drivable from the scene. Lee was issued a written warning for following too closely.
Too Fast
Newtown police were called to the area of 59 Hawleyville Road at about 8:26 am on October 14 after a reported collision. Upon investigation, officers report Jonathan Tierney, 33, was operating a 2005 Ford Focus southbound when he veered off the road to avoid another vehicle that had stopped for a deer in the roadway. The Ford struck a state sign off the road. Tierney was subsequently issued a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions.
