I am writing to urge District 3 residents to vote for James Belden for Legislative Council. I have known James for several years, mostly through our work together on environmental issues and the Pootatuck Watershed Association, of which he is president.

James is not only an ardent environmentalist, but also a highly intelligent, informed community member who sees the big picture and skillfully assists disparate entities reach shared goals. He listens carefully to all sides and recognizes that compromise is critical to solving many disagreements.

James has recently served as an alternate on the Planning and Zoning Commission, where he has been a vocal but pragmatic presence. His calm demeanor and razor-sharp ability to get to the heart of the matter are invaluable qualities when it comes to heated discussions with many stake holders.

James’s past work experience includes waste management in New York City, where he served on community and quasi-governmental bodies regarding difficult issues such as the siting of waste management facilities. He is also experienced with operations and general business management.

A stay-at-home dad of triplets, James is highly attuned to educational issues. He has worked tirelessly to bring Trout in the Classroom, a program for students offered by Trout Unlimited, to numerous schools in Newtown and other communities. This program provides aquariums and fish to classrooms. The students care for the fish until spring, when they release the fish into local streams. Not only is this program very popular among the hundreds of students it has reached, but it has helped them learn about conservation, biology, community responsibility, etc.

James cares deeply about Newtown and has a strong commitment to help bring about positive, practical change to our community. His rare talent for understanding issues and for figuring out and implementing solutions make James an ideal candidate for the important job of Legislative Council member.
