Pirates Baseball Highlights
The Newtown Pirates U13-15 fall baseball team played Pomperaug, Bethel and New Milford this past week. Game results are as follows:
Pomperaug 5, Pirates 4: A battle to the seventh inning, Patrick Pierce started the low scoring game on the mound. Anthony Maki pitched well, striking out five batters in four innings and catcher Mario Pizighelli kept the steals to a minimum for five innings. The offense did a great job with a hard RBI triple by Maki and RBI singles by Pierce, David Valerie and Ryan Palmer.
Pirates 9, Bethel 5: The Pirates took the lead when John Lebinski connected with bases loaded, driving in all three runners. The Pirates also got RBI singles from Sean Dardine, Lebinski and Justin DeVellis, and a double by Mario Pizighelli. David Valerie stretched a double out of a perfect bunt. Nothing got past outfielders Tyler Gibney, Jamie MacDonald and Dardine. The play of the game came when Alex LaPinski made the catch and threw home for the double play.
Pirates 12, New Milford 2: John Lebinski had six strikeouts in four innings. Tyler Gibney and Nick Sajovic also provided solid pitching for the Pirates. Patrick Pierce made a great play, throwing a runner out at the plate. Catcher Justin DeVellis made the tag. Sean Dardine, Sajovic, Mario Pizighelli and Gibney were sharp in the field. The bats continued to sizzle with RBI singles by John Maki, DeVellis and Sajovic and RBI doubles by Maki, DeVellis, Dardine and Lebinski. Gibney had three singles, Pizighelli, DeVellis and Pierce each had singles. Gibney and Sajovic stole home. Sajovic was hit by two pitches and Pizighelli was hit once.
Pirates 13, New Milford 9: Anthony Maki, Mario Pizighelli and Justin DeVellis were strong on the mound, while John Lebinski was a one-man show at third base, catching three pop ups in one inning. Alex Lapinski, Dan Harrison, Jamie MacDonald, Patrick Pierce and Lebinski all had hits DeVellis had two RBI singles. Sean Dardine, Ryan Palmer and Lebinski also produced runs with key hits.
