Open House At Cullens, Sunday
Cullens Youth Association invites the public to an open house on Sunday, October 18, from 1 to 4 pm, at 72 Taunton Lake Road.
Cullens Memorial consists of more than 20 acres and offers a 2,400-square-foot lodge equipped with a kitchen, meeting area, and restrooms, as well as a two-acre activity field, four acres of wooded camping sites, and a seven-acre pond. It is available for use by any organized youth group in Newtown, such as religious youth groups, special needs groups, or outdoor clubs for youth. The open house is intended to increase the publicâs awareness of this resource.
There is no charge to organized groups wishing to use the space. To reserve the lodge or grounds, call 426-1799.
Cullens is named after the Reverend Paul Cullens, who moved to Newtown in 1927 to serve as minister of Newtown Congregational Church. Rev Cullens and his wife, Agnes, started the first Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops in Newtown.
Cullens Youth Association is a tribute to the ideals and inspiration of the Cullenses. Its goal is to encourage the personal growth and development of youth. It is actively used by Boy and Girl Scouts and other youth groups for camping, meetings, and ceremonies.
Cullens operates on a limited budget and relies on donations to cover the cost associated with operating the facility. Donations may be sent to Cullens Youth Association, PO Box 323, Newtown CT 06470.
The open house will feature camping and cooking demonstrations, canoeing, fishing, and other activities. Admission is free.
