NMS Student Council Members Chosen

It was not easy, as teacher Linda Dale Mulholland said to students gathered to hear presentations on Friday, October 9, for the 12 Newtown Middle School students to stand on the stage before their peers, but the students running for positions on this yearâs Student Council stood up and gave their speeches anyway.
âGood morning fellow middle schoolers,â said the first speaker, Christina Badiola. Christina told her peers she felt she is fit for the job of president, because she plays soccer, practices track, and more. âI am also good at controlling large groups of people. Last winter I would go after school to Hawley across the street and assist with teaching the after school activities.â
Christina was one of three students running for the position of president on the NMS Student Council.
âThe definition of a leader is a person who has authority or influence,â said Matt Mossbarger, the second speaker during the event. âIn addition, a leader must qualify as a caring, hardworking and responsible individual. I believe all these qualities are needed in a Student Council president. That is why I believe you should vote for me, Matthew Mossbarger, as your president this year.â
Once one student was finished speaking, the next would stand to speak to the crowd. The assembled middle school students were asked to only clap once each student running for one position had spoken. Students who added their name to NMSâs ballot for Student Council president this year were Christina Badiola, Matt Mossbarger, and Mary Joe Rossi. Vice president candidates were Nick Lotrecchiano, Victoria Madden, and Nicole OâLeary. Students who ran for the position of spokesperson were Sarah Riccio and Katelyn Zimmerman, and treasurer contenders were Annie Beier, Noelle Benson, Meaghan Brophy, and Lauren Harrison.
By the end of the day, NMS students had voted, and Matt Mossbarger was elected president, Nick Lotrecchiano vice president, Katelyn Zimmerman was spokesperson, and Noelle Benson was voted in as treasurer.
