Manners

To the Editor:

Yesterday, my wife and myself were out running errands for our business, and just happened to drive by the local ice cream store on Church Hill Road. I guess the middle school children were out for the day and were in the business. Yelling, screaming, shouting, a few profanities, apparently many town parents have not taught their children how to behave in public places in a semicivilized manner (I blame the parents 100 percent).

As we are sitting there enjoying our ice cream, two kids stand in front of our vehicle and proceed to stare at us and wave at us (not being friendly but rather annoying and intentionally obnoxious) towards us. Eventually, two or more of them stood on the side of our vehicle and proceeded further to annoy us, as we were attempting to have a serious conversation. Having had enough of their nonsense and annoyance, I advised them that annoying and interfering with others could get them arrested, and told them to beat feet.

This they understood and beat a hasty retreat away from us. I have to wonder if the parents are any better, or if the kids get this obnoxious behavior from them. Neither one of our parents would have allowed us to behave like this in public. Ignoring them only caused them to persist even more, and finally we both had enough. Parents, learn to curb your children’s obnoxious behavior or don’t let them out in public. Perhaps longer school days would not be a bad thing as teachers could teach them about manners, and what is not appropriate in public. If they want to behave like wild animals, take them to the animal walking trail at Fairfield Hills.

Maybe the little kid drinking a large Starbucks coffee and walking around with caffeine energy drinks explain it; way, way, too much caffeine for little kids.
