Lightning Strikes For Second Place In Poughkeepsie Soccer Club Columbus Weekend Tournament

Newtown’s U13 girls’ travel soccer team, the Lightning, took second place in the Poughkeepsie Soccer Club Columbus Weekend Tournament, ending the day with a 3-1-1 tournament record. Game results are as follows:

Westchester 1, Lightning 0: Newtown suffered its only loss of the tournament after a slow start in the first game. Michelle Zarifis hustled on defense and Kate Fallon and Shelby Tolla contributed solid play in the midfield. Andrea Rodriguez was tough in the goal.

Lightning 0, Clarkstown 0: In Game 2, Sarah Lynch and Megan Weber led the offense with repeated drives on Clarkstown’s goal. Although Newtown was unable to convert a shot, the Lightning players successfully shut down their opponents’ offensive efforts, ending the match with a scoreless tie. Meg Korchman anchored the defense and Andrea Rodriguez had another good game in the nets.

Lightning 2, Scarsdale 0: The girls came on strong in Game 3 to start their winning streak, which continued through the end of the tournament. Sarah Lynch scored the first goal with an assist by Amy Martinelli, then Kate Fallon put one in after a setup by Lynch. Sophia DeVivo helped keep up the offensive pressure, and Emily Davis played well on defense. Jesse Sailer showed her skills in the goal.

Lightning 1, Chappaqua 0: Andrea Rodriguez scored the only goal in Game 4, with a well-placed assist from Sarah Lynch. Keeper Jesse Sailer had great presence in the goal, supported with strong play by Dale Shearin, Raquel Crespo and Amy Martinelli on defense and in the midfield.

Lightning 2, Armonk 0: Shelby Tolla had a great all-around game, scoring both goals for Newtown, and Sarah Lynch notched her fourth assist of the tournament. Cassie Fischer was a force in the midfield, and Jesse Sailer played well in goal for another shutout.
