Julia H. Allen, 88, of Walnut Tree Village, Newtown, died October 13, in Danbury Hospital. Mrs Allen was the wife of the late Frank A. Allen. She was born in Hawthorne, N.J., on March 20, 1921, the third daughter of Sadie (Klazens) and Edward Herring.

She was educated in Hawthorne and graduated from Hawthorne High School in 1940. Mrs Allen was also a graduate of Drake’s Business School.

Mrs Allen was best known in Newtown for being the founder of Julie Allen Bridals, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2010. During her working career in New Jersey, she was employed by Watson Flagg Electric, Passaic County Steel founded by her father, Edward Herring, Strrocks Woolen Factory, and Lane Bryant in Paramus, N.J. When she relocated to Connecticut, and prior to opening her own shop, Mrs Allen opened a Lane Bryant store in Hartford and New Haven, and managed the Jaymar Fashions Store in Newtown.

Mrs Allen was a member of the Newtown Congregational Church and was a member of the Newtown Woman’s Club.

She is survived by two sons, Stephen R. Allen and his wife, Lucinda, of Plattsburgh, N.Y., and Gregory J. Allen and his wife, Jane Ambrozatis, of Waterbury; a daughter, Melanie A. Mattegat and her husband, Jay, of Newtown; and a sister, Edna Roth of Naples, Fla. She is also survived by four granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 16, at 10 am, in the Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street. Interment will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery. Calling hours were scheduled at the Honan Funeral Home, Newtown, Thursday, October 15, from 6 to 8 pm.
