Evading Responsibility—

Pickup Truck Hits Pedestrian In Hawleyville

At about 6:55 pm October 9, police received a report of a truck having hit a pedestrian on Hawleyville Road (Route 25) in Hawleyville, so they went to the area to investigate.

Police said that a 30-year-old Brookfield man was pushing a bicycle on Hawleyville Road, near the Brookfield town line, when a dark-colored full-size pickup truck driven by an unknown motorist struck the walking man, but did not stop at the accident scene.

Police said the man was walking northward on turf alongside the northbound lane and was pushing the bicycle on the road’s paved shoulder when the northbound truck hit the man from behind.

Police did not identify the victim, who they said received minor scrapes and bruises in the collision.

Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps members responded to the accident to treat the man, who did not require transport to a hospital, police said.

Police estimate that the victim probably was struck by the truck’s right exterior rear-view mirror. Mirror fragments are likely missing from the truck’s mirror, police said. The impact of the collision crushed the bicycle.

Police Patrol Officer Dana Schubert, who is investigating the incident, asks anyone who knows the identity of the offending truck driver, or anyone who witnessed the accident, to contact him at the police station at 426-5841. The police tip line number is 270-8888.
