Democratic Board of Selectmen candidates Gary Fetzer and Joe Hemingway announced that they will lead a canned food drive from October 24 to October 31 to collect items for Newtownâs FAITH Food Pantry.
âIn tough times it is even more important that we all team up and work together,â said Mr Fetzer in a release announcing the initiative. âBy working together we can make a real difference in the Newtown community.â
The event will kick off with a collection at Team Newtownâs Democratic headquarters at 111 Church Hill Road on Saturday, October 24, from 9 am to 2 pm. On this day, Democratic candidates will also be happy to collect canned goods from Newtown residents at their homes as they go door to door talking about the upcoming election.Â
Collections will continue throughout the week with a collection box at Democratic headquarters. The event will conclude on Halloween, when Democratic Board of Finance candidate Jim Gaston will have a box on his front lawn at 18 Main Street to take up further food collections.
âIn the past some people have been frustrated at politicians campaigning on Halloween,â said Mr Gaston. âThe Democrats will not be campaigning or politicizing Main Street. We simply ask that Newtown residents make a contribution to this important and worthwhile cause.â
According to the release, other party candidates will have boxes on their front lawns to collect while trick-or-treating is going on in their neighborhoods, but all Newtown voters who go to Main Street for trick-or-treating are encouraged to make a donation.
âIn light of the current economic situation, the FAITH Food Pantry has seen an increase in people in need,â said Mr Hemingway. âIt is our hope that this collection will help hold them over until Thanksgiving when they generally get a wave of contributions.â
