Comets Streak To Soccer Success
 Newtownâs U12 girlsâ soccer team, the Comets, captured the West Haven Soccer Tournament this past weekend.
The Comets won four straight game in preliminary round play against Cheshire, North Haven, West Haven and Shelton and then earned a 3-2 victory over Naugatuck in the Championship game. Kim Brello led the charge with 3 assists and 2 goals and Mikayla Kuligowski had 3 goals during the tough weekend.
Emily Charash was outstanding in goal with 18 saves in four games and Katie Mossbarger had 3 saves as the keeper in one match. Besides scoring off a PK, Julia Schoeni was a force on defense. Also contributing assists were Brittany Antous and Casey Harkins with 2 apiece, and Mossbarger with another.
The other goals were scored by Portia Baudisch, Quinn Karp and Anna Biondi, who was strong in the midfield all weekend long. Haley Trudell kept the pressure off the defense with fine footwork at midfield. The defense, led by Christina DeBartolomeo, Victoria Kirkman, Sarah Lyons and Veronica Moyer, gave up only 4 goals in 5 games to secure the victories.
