Newtown High School’s girls’ swimming and diving team had a competitive meet on the road against Brookfield on October 4. The Nighthawks fell 99-84 despite some impressive swims.

“It was a very close meet, our closest of the season so far. We were hoping to pull off a win but overall it was a good test for the team. We saw a lot of really good things happening and identified some things we can improve upon,” Newtown Coach Lisa Irving said.

The 200 yard medley relay team was narrowly edged out for first place as Sierra Marx, Alexa Kwarcinski, Maddie Marcisz, and Zoe Petertonjes finished in 1:56.91, just behind Brookfield’s top relay, which came in with a time of 1:56.06. Newtown also took third in the relay race as Emily Metzker, Audrey McLean, Indigo Land, and Kaila Sullivan completed the race in 2:13.34.

Lillian Accettella was second in the 200 freestyle race with a time of 2:11.73. Kwarcinski won the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:13.84; Marcisz placed third in 2:27.09. Petertonjes won the 50 free in 25.61; Land came in third in 26.90. Grace Kase placed third in the diving competition.

Petertonjes placed second in the 100 butterfly race with a time of 1:00.82. Accettella was second in the 100 free in 59.34, just ahead of teammate and third-place finisher Marx in 1:00.43. Angela Wennerholm took third in the 500, making her final touch in 6:04.82.

In the 200 free relay race Kwarcinski, Marcisz, Land, and Accettella won in a time of 1:47.46 and Ella Viau, Sullivan, McLean, and Wennerholm earned third in 2:03.79. Marx was second in the 100 backstroke race (time not recorded) and Metzker was third in the event in 1:09.32. Kwarcinski was first in the 100 breaststroke event in 1:09.54; Land took third in 1:20.95. In the 400 free relay Accettella, Marx, Wennerholm, and Petertonjes placed second, clocking in with a time of 3:59.26.

Newtown’s next meet is Tuesday, October 15, when the Nighthawks visit Weston at 4 pm.

“We have a bit of a break in our competition schedule before we gear up for our final three meets of the regular season and then shift our attention to SWCs and State Championships,” Irving said.

NHS finishes the regular season October 18 at home against New Fairfield at 4 pm and October 22 at Masuk of Monroe at 6 pm. Then the postseason gets underway, beginning with the South-West Conference Championships; the diving competition is in New Fairfield October 30 at 5:30 pm with the swimming events scheduled to take place at Masuk on November 2 at 5 pm.
