Serving Key To Success On Dig Pink Night For Volleyball Team
Newtown High School's girls' volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 19-25, 25-18) win over visiting Bunnell of Stratford, on October 14, on the team's Dig Pink Night in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Tessa Leon-Gambetta led the Nighthawks with four aces, Kaitlyn Schneider closed out the match with three consecutive aces, and Zoe Beals and Tess Mubarek added two aces apiece.
Aside from the many aces the Nighthawks compiled, there were numerous serves that were well-placed and put the Bulldogs on their heels, leading to Newtown points.
"We served very well," Newtown Coach Tom Czaplinski said.
Beals had 17 kills and 17 digs; Schneider racked up 24 digs and ten kills; Molly McCoy had 46 assists and six digs; Leon-Gambetta compiled 13 digs; Erin Mitchell had four kills; Sarah Dowling had seven digs; and Erin Burns had three blocks and five kills.
The Nighthawks withstood a no-quit effort by Bunnell, in which the Bulldogs battled to make each game fairly close.
"Bunnell played fantastic defense. They dug everything we gave them and we didn't have an answer," Czaplinski said.
Despite that, the Hawks got the job done, but the coach saw plenty of areas in which the Nighthawks can do better.
"They were very resilient today," Czaplinski said of his players. "We need to improve on a little bit of everything."
