To the Editor:
In todayâs economy we need a representative in Hartford who will safeguard our tax dollars. This person is George Ferguson. In the last two years, Chris Lyddy has voted to increase the tax burden on all of us without consideration for how to pay for those increases. Although Chris is a very nice young man, he is not focused on the issues that I feel are important. I donât believe he understands or has acted on behalf of the average Newtowner. Letâs look at the last two years:
Connecticutâs debt per person is the highest in the nation.
Almost 3,000 businesses closed their doors.
The state is facing an unprecedented budget deficit.
What does all this mean? It means we are paying higher taxes when we cannot afford to pay more. How can our representatives ask us to pay higher taxes when many of us havenât gotten a raise in the last few years, have been asked to contribute an increasing larger amount to our own benefits (if we are lucky enough to have them), have had our hours reduced, or lost our jobs.
All this has happened under Chris Lyddyâs watch. I was shocked when I heard the fact every child born in Connecticut will inherit $6,812 in debt. Our course must change. I believe George Ferguson will take the necessary steps to do that including:
Only agree to spend what we can afford
Borrow within our means
Itâs simple; we are paying more because we are spending more. Letâs bring someone to Hartford who has the strength and maturity to say No. Please join me in supporting George Ferguson for the 106th on Tuesday, November 2.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Jacob
