Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Newtown Senior Center is still accepting donations for the White Elephant Room for the Fall Bazaar. Bring in your treasures.

*Annual Fall Bazaar open house preview will be Thursday, October 21, from 6 to 8 pm. Regular hours will be Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23, 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday, October 24, 9 am to noon.

Upcoming Programs

*Halloween Party Bingo will be Thursday, October 28, at 1 pm. Refreshments will be served and a prize for most original costume will be given. Also sign up for lunch.

*Informational meeting for Health Net members only on Tuesday, November 16, at 1:30 pm. Benefit changes for 2011 will be discussed and questions will be answered.

*Fuel assistance applications and Medicare Part D Applications will be accepted between November 15 and December 31. Call the Newtown Senior Center in advance for requirements.

 

Day Trips

*Villa Bianca Halloween Bash, featuring a family-style luncheon, Halloween music, and magical entertainment will be on Tuesday, October 26, from 11:30 am to 2 pm. Costumes are welcome. Cost is $29.95.

*Oktoberfest, a Bavarian day of feasting, dancing music, activities, open bar, and entertainment will be at Hunt’s Landing in Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, October 27. Depart at 9:30; cost is $80.

*On Wednesday, November 3, depart for Mohegan Sun at 8 am. Cost is $31; $15 food coupon is included.

*A tasty Thanksgiving at Mount Haven Resort on Thursday, November 18, includes music, comedy, singing, full breakfast buffet, complete buffet dinner, and four-hour open bar. Cost is $73; depart at 9 am.

*Save the date for UConn Women’s Basketball vs Ohio State on Sunday, December 19, at Madison Square Garden. Departure time and cost to be announced at a later date.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 10 am with Mary Matern.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, art class.

Tuesday: AM line dancing, cards for troops; PM Tai Chi, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc, Wii bowling.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc; PM Scrabble.

Friday: AM Mah Jongg, quilting, exercise, chair yoga; PM knitting/crocheting.

 

Menu For Week Of October 18–22

Monday: Tomato basil soup with crackers, hot open turkey sandwich on wheat bread with gravy, steak fries with ketchup, coleslaw, vanilla pudding with whipped topping.

Tuesday: Sweet and sour meatballs over egg noodles, cut green beans, herbed breadstick, chocolate cookie.

Wednesday: Baked pork loin with gravy, smashed potato, fresh acorn squash, whole wheat bread, cinnamon applesauce.

Thursday: Crab cake with tarter sauce and lemon, rice pilaf, fiesta blend vegetables, potato bread, seasonal fresh fruit.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, October 25: Stuffed pepper, mashed squash, California blend vegetables, seedless rye bread, apricot halves.

Tuesday, October 26: Fish with mild Creole sauce and lemon or ham and cheese sandwich on wheat with mustard, roasted potatoes, fresh zucchini, wheat bread, fruit cocktail.
