Main Street Crash

Police report that at about 10:53 am on October 1, motorist Bernie Testani, 58, of 301 South Main Street was driving a 2003 Ford sedan northward on Main Street, as motorist Rejane DaSilva, 40, of Danbury was driving a 2004 Jeep SUV southward on Main Street.

The Ford then attempted to make a left turn to enter the driveway at 3 Main Street, but collided with the Jeep, police said.

Ambulance volunteers transported Testani to Danbury Hospital on a report of pain, police said.

Testani received a misdemeanor summons for driving with a vehicle with a suspended registration, police said. Testani also made a restricted turn, according to police.

DaSilva received an infraction for driving without a license, police said.

Vehicular Violations

Police report they saw motorist April Paige-Coutts, 35, of Brookfield driving a Chevrolet SUV eastward on Church Hill Road in Sandy Hook Center which did not stop for a red traffic signal, so they stopped the Chevrolet on Riverside Road at about 9:50 am October 5.

After investigating, police issued Paige-Coutts a misdemeanor summons on a charge of driving a vehicle with a suspended registration for which she was scheduled to appear in court on October 15. Also, police gave her an infraction on a charge of violating a traffic signal.

South Main Accident

Motorist Michelle Velthuizen, 24, of 44 Mt Pleasant Road was driving a 1995 Subaru sedan northward on South Main Street about 4:53 pm October 1, police said.

At that time, motorist Janet Stevens, 65, of North Salem, N.Y., who was driving a 1998 Subaru station wagon, pulled out from the driveway at 97 South Main Street and drove directly in front of the approaching 1995 Subaru sedan, police said.

The two Subarus collided. There were no injuries. Police said they verbally warned Stevens for failure to grant the right of way.

Berkshire Road

A two-vehicle accident occurred near 51 Berkshire Road at about 6:26 pm October 1.

Police said that westbound motorist Chandrakant Patel, 48, of New Fairfield, who was driving a 2003 Toyota sedan, stopped for traffic conditions and was struck from behind by westbound motorist Cody Cahill, 17, of 44 Tomahawk Trail, who was driving a 1999 Ford pickup truck.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Cahill an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Rear-Ender

About 8:36 am on October 5, motorist Ryan Bunt, 31, of Baltimore, Md., who was driving a 2008 Isuzu pickup truck southward on Main Street, stopped and was waiting for northbound traffic to clear so that he could turn left into the driveway at 64 Main Street, police said.

At that time, motorist Goncne Ramazan, 25, of Gurnee, Ill., who was driving a 1994 Toyota sedan southward on Main Street, came around a corner and spotted the Isuzu, but could not stop in time due to wet road conditions, resulting in the Toyota striking the rear end of the Isuzu, police said.

There were no injuries. Police issued Ramazan an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart. They also verbally warned Ramazan for traveling too fast for conditions.

MV Violations

Police report they stopped motorist Mark D’Arinzo, 28, of South Kent for not having a front marker plate on his vehicle near 19 Main Street about 5:47 pm October 6.

After investigating, police charged D’Arinzo with failure to have a front marker plate and with driving with a suspended license. Police released him on a written promise to appear in court on October 21.

Truck Hits Bridge

Police report that Denard Marsh, 25, of New Haven was driving a 1998 International commercial truck westward on Botsford Hill Road about 8 am October 6, when the top of the truck struck the underside of the Housatonic Railroad’s rail bridge there as the truck attempted to drive beneath the span.

Police issued Marsh an infraction for driving a vehicle that exceeds the posted height limit for a bridge.

Vehicle Vandalism

Newtown Police are looking for witnesses or information regarding vandalism to a motor vehicle that occurred on the area of Pine Tree Hill Road on September 26. Anyone who may be able to offer information is asked to contact Sgt Richard Robinson at 203-426-5841.

Misuse Of Plates

A local officer on patrol stopped Dean Napolitano, 22, of Seymour at about 4:43 pm on October 4 in the area of 16 Glover Avenue after noticing the vehicle he was operating had no front marker plate. After a brief investigation, it was determined that the rear plate on the vehicle did not match. He was issued a misdemeanor summons for misuse of plates and no front plate. He was released on a written promise to appear in court and his vehicle was towed from the scene.

 

Marijuana & MV Charges

During a routine traffic stop in the area of 43 South Main Street at about 7 pm on October 9, Newtown Police discovered the operator was in possession of a quantity of marijuana. That led to the arrest of Ronnie L. Underwood, 18, of Brooks Street in Bridgeport. Underwood was charged with possession of less than 4 ounces of marijuana and possession of marijuana with intent to sell. He was subsequently released on a $500 surety bond pending an October 21 court date. The motor vehicle stop was initiated because the operator, Dannella Scarlett, 20, of Westfield Avenue in Bridgeport, reportedly had a defective headlight. Scarlett was also arrested and issued a misdemeanor summons for misuse of a motor vehicle registration, failure to have insurance, and the headlamp violation. She was released on a written promise to appear in court, also on October 21.

 

Following Too Close

Two apparent neighbors from Shelton, who were operating separate vehicles, were involved in a minor rear end crash at about 1:46 pm on October 5 eastbound on Berkshire Road in the area of Pole Bridge Road. According to Police, Crystalann Carrano, 18 of Stendahl Drive, Shelton, was operating a 2008 Pontiac behind Ashley Shorrock, 21, also of Stendahl Drive, who was operating a 2008 Mazda. According to the report, a third vehicle ahead of Ms Shorrock stopped to make a turn, and when the Mazda stopped, it was struck from behind by Carrano. The collision caused damage to the Pontiac, requiring the vehicle to be towed. Carrano was charged with following too closely, and a subsequent investigation determined Shorrock was operating with an expired registration, so police charged her with the failure to renew the registration.

 

Chain Reaction

On October 7 at about 3:50 pm, police responded to the intersection of South Main Street and Meadowbrook Road following the report of a three-vehicle collision. According to the report, all three vehicles were facing southbound on South Main Street and stopped at the traffic light at Meadowbrook Road. Police say when the light turned green, the last vehicle in the line began to move forward contacting the rear of the middle vehicle. The contact pushed the second vehicle forward past the first vehicle in line, striking the first vehicle’s driver side mirror. Both operators of the first and second vehicle were transported to the hospital with what police described as “possible injuries.” The crash is still under investigation.

 

Weapons Found

Police were called to the Sand Hill Plaza on South Main Street at about 4:15 pm on October 10 after a report of several individuals driving in the plaza wearing black ski masks. Police subsequently located three individuals in a vehicle and were found to be in possession of a sling shot, a bb gun, a lead pipe and the ski masks. Two youthful offenders were charged along with Rafael Alves, 18 of Park Lane in Newtown, were charged with breach of peace, carrying a dangerous weapon and possession of weapons in a motor vehicle. The youthful offenders were released on individual promises to appear in court, and Alves was released on bond pending an October 26 court date.

Outstanding Warrant

On October 11 at about 8 pm, Mary Lake, 55, of Country Club Road turned herself in to local police after she was notified of an active warrant for her arrest. The warrant was issued by Danbury Superior Court, according to the report, and Lake was subsequently charged and released on a written promise to appear in court on October 12. The arrest stemmed from incidents that police say occurred on or about September 4 and 5 of this year. The charge involves the alleged assault of an elderly, blind, disabled, pregnant, or mentally retarded person in the third degree, a Class A misdemeanor.

Multiple Violations

Following a motor vehicle stop in the area of 1 Vining Road at about 4:29 pm on October 8, Police arrested Heather Marsh, 32, of Candlewood Lake Road in Brookfield. After processing, Marsh was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating with a suspended license, failure to carry minimum insurance, operating an unregistered vehicle, and failure to display a front marker plate. She was then released on a promise to appear in court on October 28.

Suspended License

Police were dispatched to 17 Borough Lane at about 7:16 pm October 11 after receiving a report of a suspicious vehicle. An investigation led to the arrest of Angel Lalvay, 22, of Spring Street in Danbury, who was subsequently issued a summons for operating with a suspended license. He was subsequently released on a $1,000 cash bond pending an October 26 court appearance.

Registration Suspended

Following a motor vehicle stop at about 4:44 pm on October 7, Ryan Sweeney, 22, of Hillendale Drive, New Milford, was arrested and charged with improperly displaying a front marker plate, having one operational headlight, and operating with a suspended license. He was subsequently released on a written promise to appear in court on October 21 to answer to the offenses.

Assault Arrest

Police responded to a report of an assault at an Old Bethel Road location at about 9:47 pm on October 12. Upon investigation, police arrested Joseph Cennamo III, 45, of Newtown and charged him with assault in the second degree, interference with an emergency call, and strangulation in the second degree. He was held on a $100,000 appearance bond and was arraigned in Danbury Court the following day. According to the report, the victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Shoplifting Arrest

Newtown Police responded to the Big Y market on Queen Street at about 7:36 pm on October 7 after a reported larceny. Upon arrival they arrested James Freeman, 47 of Walnut Tree Hill Road, who was being held by store security guards, who reportedly witnessed Freeman shoplifting. He was charged with larceny in the sixth degree and subsequently released on a written promise to appear in court on October 21.

Three Car Collision

Following a call about a multi-vehicle crash in the area of 69 Berkshire Road, Police responded and after an investigation charged Simon Norbert, 83, of Cricket Trail, Sandy Hook with following too closely, and Mario Valenzuela, 29, of Mill Ridge Road, Danbury with operating without a license. According to police, Valenzuela, who was operating a 1997 Honda and Karen Carter Mills, 55, of Pole Bridge Road, who was operating a 2007 Ford convertible, were both southbound when they stopped to permit another unidentified vehicle to make a left turn. Norbert, who was operating a 1996 Ford SUV approached the other two vehicles from behind, but failed to stop. His vehicle hit Valenzuela in the rear and pushed it into the rear of Mills’ vehicle. No injuries were reported, but the Honda and Ford SUV had to be towed from the scene. The Ford convertible also sustained rear end damage.

Highway DUI Arrest

State Police responded to a motor vehicle crash on I-84 eastbound in the area of Exit 11 in Newtown at 4:13 am October 12, and after an investigation arrested Mark Cersoli, 48, of Smith Street, Torrington, on charges of driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. According to police, Cersoli was operating a 2003 Chevrolet S10 pickup in the left lane when he drifted over the left shoulder, connecting with the wire rope guardrail. There were no reported injuries and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Minor Rear-Ender

State police issued David Price, 44, of Great Ring Road, Monroe, a verbal warning for following too close following a minor collision on I-84 west in the area of Tunnel Road at 9:18 am on October 12. Price was operating a 2004 Jeep Cherokee in stop and go commuter traffic on the rain-slicked roadway, police said, when he made minor contact with a 2004 Pontiac being operated by Chris Butterfield, 56, of Deerwood Drive, Bethel. No injuries were reported.

Following Too Close

State Police responded to a report of a minor rear end collision on I-84 eastbound near Exit 9 at 5:14 pm on October 11. Following a brief investigation, Evan Rose, 37, of Gilbert Avenue, Hamden, was issued a verbal warning for following too closely. According to the report, Rose was operating 2005 Mercury SUV when he failed to stop as Leon Rotunda, 25, of Terrace Avenue, Naugatuck, slowed the 2008 Chevrolet Express as he was operating for stopped traffic. Both vehicles sustained minor damage, and no injuries were reported.

Pickup Vs Pickup

On October 7 at about 4:52 pm, State Police reported Joseph Zmuda, 45, of Bethany Road in Beacon Falls was operating a 2008 Dodge Ram pickup eastbound on I-84 eastbound between the off and on ramp at Exit 9 when he stopped for traffic and was hit from behind by Alexander McWilliams, 62, of Waxhaw, N.C., who was operating a 2008 Toyota Tundra pickup. McWilliams was issued a verbal warning for following too closely, and his vehicle was towed from the scene due to reported heavy front end damage. No injuries were reported.
