In Support Of Uncle Sam
In Support Of Uncle Sam
To the Editor:
Today, as I sat down with my family to watch the evening news, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that one of the top stories on the news was from the town that I have lived in from 1982, served as a volunteer firefighter for 25 years, sent my son through the Newtown school system and continue to enjoy its nuances and community spirit. Then I heard why Newtown was on the news and my spirit dropped.
The town has ordered Mr Payne to take down a symbol of our beloved country. In my opinion, they are harassing a second generation small business owner, civil servant, and a genuine all-around good citizen and taxpayer, who himself has volunteered his time and expertise in the service of the town. This statue of Uncle Sam, a symbol of Americana, was put up to honor and pay tribute to two of Mr Payneâs friends who are overseas serving in the US military. I have to admit that I was a little surprised that in this day and age the town has chosen to demand that this be removed.
I see no âsignâ on this piece of history (which had been a part of the Danbury Fair) that would entice me to enter his place of business and make a purchase. I hope that Mr Payne continues to force this issue. In my opinion, we would all be better off if we just stopped and thought for a minute what we have to enjoy and all that our soldiers and their families have given up in order for us to do so.
I would like to donate $100 to Mr Payne, to cover the first dayâs fine, if the town chooses to impose it. In my eyes, Uncle Sam helps make it âNicer in Newtown.â Whatâs next, no flags or blue stars on peopleâs homes?
