There was a great interception attempt by 79er Blue player Jared Dunn on foiling a 79er Gold pass play that could have ended up as a touchdown for the Gold team.

Newtown Nighthawks 7, Bethel Bobcats 0: The fifth grade boys were buzzing as they took the field on Newtown Day. In the first quarter, Ryan Kost got through the Bethel secondary with big pass plays to CJ Shambelan and Kyle Roche. It wasn’t until late in the second quarter when Chris Faxon and Connor Marlin parted the Bethel defense providing a hole for David Daria to break into the secondary at a full clip for a 70-yard touchdown run. Newtown made the extra point for the 7-0 lead. The next Bethel drive was cut short by a Shane Gupta interception. Late in the fourth quarter, Bethel did move into the red zone, but big plays by Will Stenz and Cayden Dunn helped keep Bethel out of the end zone. The game ended with a drive led by the running of Josh Dunn that shaved time off the clock.

Norwalk Ravens 19, Nighthawks 0 (result from previous week): Fall was in the air as the Fifth Grade Nighthawks traveled to Norwalk to take on the Ravens. Josh Dunn started the game with a great kick off return, setting Newtown up on the Norwalk 44. The offense was not able to capitalize and Norwalk took over on its own 34. On the first defensive series it looked like the defense might hold when Andrew Deluca made a big tackle for a loss setting up a fourth and long, but subsequent big plays by Norwalk resulted in a touchdown making the score 7-0. For the remainder of the first half, the field seemed to tilt to Norwalk’s advantage, allowing them to score one more time, making the score 13-0.

Newtown came out it the second half and tried to recapture the momentum when Simon Preston made a big tackle for a loss. Norwalk was forced to punt and Josh Dunn had a great return, set up by a block by Mark Hall. On the next series, Ryan Kost was given some time and completed passes to Nick Weiland and Josh Dunn. Once again, the Norwalk defense found a way to stop Newtown’s efforts and ended the drive with no points scored. In the fourth quarter Norwalk made another big play resulting in a touchdown bringing the score to 19-0. The boys never gave up their fight and, in spite of tremendous pressure from multiple blitzes, Ryan Kost and the Newtown offense moved the ball down the field one last time but came up short again.
