Too Fast For Conditions

Newtown Police report Diego Kelly, 18, of Easton, operating a 2008 Chevrolet Aveo, was traveling on Hanover Road at 10:39 pm September 26. Kelly attempted to make a right turn from Hanover just before it changes to The Boulevard and struck the guardrail.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Kelly was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Mirrors Collided

Newtown Police report David VanSteenburgh, 39, of Fairfield, operating a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling westbound on Osborne Hill Road at 2:11 pm September 27. Najee Schoon, 36, of Waterbury, operating a 2017 Ford E350, was traveling eastbound on Osborne Hill Road. As the two vehicles passed each other, the driver’s side mirror of both vehicles made contact with each other.

A passenger sustained a minor cut from glass but declined transport. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Evan Martell, 35, of Oxford, operating a 2018 Ford F150, was traveling on Church Hill Road at 2:50 pm September 27. He was traveling behind a 2018 BMW 530 operated by Paul Tiesler, 34, of Newtown. Tiesler stopped at the intersection of Main Street and Martell did not stop in time, rear-ending Tiesler’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported.

Martell was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Motor Vehicle Larceny Charge

Newtown Police report Cassidy Javornisky, 24, of Wallingford, turned herself in to Newtown Police at the police headquarters for an incident that occurred that morning on Alpine Drive on September 28.

Javornisky was charged with first degree larceny of a motor vehicle, fifth degree telephone fraud, criminal impersonation, and disorderly conduct.

Javornisky was released on a $20,000 bond with a court date of October 8 in Danbury Superior Court.

Unsafe Backing

Newtown Police report Gerardo Rosario-Linares, 46, of Ansonia, operating an Amazon delivery vehicle, was reversing eastbound on Edgelake Drive at 7:11 pm September 29. A 1999 Audi A4 owned by Steven Mayor of Sandy Hook was parked legally along the westbound shoulder of Edgelake Drive. Rosario-Linares backed into Mayor’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Rosario-Linares was issued an verbal warning for unsafe backing.

Backed Into Vehicle

Newtown Police report Jose Fiho, 59, of Danbury, operating a 2018 Ford Transit, was backing up in the parking lot of Mitchells Gas Station at 1:57 pm October 2. An unoccupied 2024 Subaru Outback owned by Mark Gillialand of New Milford was parked in a marked parking space. A trailer being towed by Fiho made contact with Gilliland’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Rear-Ended On Mt Pleasant

Newtown Police report Jaime Portelafernandes-Silva, 26, of Bethel, operating a 2015 Honda Civic, was traveling eastbound on Mt Pleasant Road at 5:56 pm October 2. He was traveling behind a 2009 Subaru Legacy operated by Victoria Foote, 28, of Kingston, N.H. Foote stopped to turn left into a driveway and Portelafernandes-Silva struck her vehicle from behind.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Portelafernandes-Silva was issued an infraction for following too close.

Struck By Deer

Newtown Police report Jarred Yilanes, 35, of Newtown, operating a 2023 Mazda CX-30, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street at 9:42 pm October 3. A deer entered the roadway from the westbound shoulder and struck the passenger side of Yilanes’ vehicle.

Yilanes was not injured. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken.

Hit Rock Wall

Newtown Police report Jack Fico, 25, of Bridgewater, operating a 2019 VW GTI, was traveling on Jordan Hill Road at 6:57 am October 6. After traveling through the intersection of Berkshire Road and Jordan Hill Road, Fico’s vehicle struck a rock wall.

No injuries were reported. Fico’s vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was mentioned in the report.

Collision In Parking Lot

Newtown Police report Rachel Felton, 40, of Bristol, operating a 2021 Kia Rio, was backing out of a parking spot in the lot of 110 Church Hill Road at 2:55 pm October 6. Jerry Rivera-Vasquez, 33, of Newtown, operating a 2024 Nissan Versa, was traveling southbound in the same lot. The rear of Felton’s vehicle collided with the right side of Rivera-Vasquez’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Two Injured In Collision

Newtown Police report Yongquan Dong, 61, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2015 Honda Pilot, was traveling on Plumtrees Road at 7:06 pm October 6. Lisa Pak, 63, of Newtown, operating a 2015 Audi Q5, was traveling eastbound on Taunton Hill Road. Pak approached the intersection with Plumtrees Road, stopped, and proceeded into the intersection. Dong did not stop at the intersection and drove in front of Pak’s vehicle, causing Pak’s vehicle to collide with his.

Both Dong and a passenger were evaluated at the scene by Newtown EMS and then transported to Danbury Hospital. Both vehicles were towed.

Dong was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign. Pak was issued a misdemeanor summons for operating under suspension.

Rear-Ended At Red Light

Newtown Police report Susan Selk, 63, of Danbury, operating a 2015 Jeep Compass, was traveling northbound on Dodgingtown Road. She was traveling behind a 2015 Subaru Outback operated by Edward Kasinskas, 67, of Bethel. Kasinskas stopped in the northbound travel lane at a red traffic light. Selk did not stop in time and rear-ended Kasinskas’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Selk was issued an infraction for following too close.

Struck Railroad Overpass

Newtown Police report Keitumetse Mokgosi, 29, of Waterbury, operating a 2022 International Mv607 tractor trailer, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road at 6:41 pm October 7. Her vehicle struck the railroad bridge overpass.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

Mokgosi received a verbal warning for failure to obey a traffic sign.

Hit Light Pole

Newtown Police report Sean McGuire, 56, of Bethel, operating a 2009 Chevrolet Express, was traveling in the parking lot of 14 Church Hill Road to exit the parking lot at 8:14 am October 8. While traveling, McGuire’s vehicle made contact with a light support pole. McGuire said he did not see the pole due to sun glare.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Arrested On Warrant

Newtown Police report that on October 8, Angelo Aguiar, 32, of Trumbull, turned himself in to Bridgeport Adult Probation on an arrest warrant for failure to appear. He was arrested and transported to the Newtown Police Department. He was released on a promise to appear with a court date of October 22 at Danbury Superior Court.

CT State Police (CSP), Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue and Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps personnel all responded to I-84 East at the Exit 11 on-ramp around 7:30 am Monday, October 7, on reports of a vehicle that rolled into the woods, with the driver trapped in the vehicle. According to the CSP report, Gerald K. Nakashian, 69, of Wayne, N.J., was operating a 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck eastbound, in the slow speed lane, when he lost control of the truck in rainy conditions. Nakashian swerved right before rolling over the right shoulder and down a slight embankment. He was checked for injuries but did not go to the hospital. Nakashian was given a verbal warning for traveling too fast for conditions. —Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue photo
