Responding To Previous Writer’s Allegations

To the Editor:

In response to the letter submitted last week by Mr Reynolds, I wholeheartedly disagree with his untrue allegations of my behavior at back-to-school night. Myself and others were blindsided by such a mischaracterization and are left questioning the motivation to write of such a letter. Unfortunately, Mr Reynolds did not provide any detail as to what the discussion was about and only seemed to focus on being upset by the fact that I wore my campaign shirt — a great conversation starter.

As a parent I have never missed a back-to-school night for either of my children and any chance I get to be in the classroom is one I have always enjoyed. During the question-and-answer period I asked two questions, neither of which were specific to my child. They were regarding the new math program and when the DRA reading assessments were going to be administered.

Both questions were relevant to all children in the class and were in fact answered by the principal who happened to be in the classroom at the time. My question came from the perspective of a concerned parent whose child is struggling with a program, as are the children of many other people I speak with.

As for wearing my campaign shirt, I stand by my decision and support my opponent’s decision who proudly wears her campaign gear. I have found this is to be a great conversation starter as it invites dialogue with other parents. We are running for the Board of Education; where else but a school is a better place to bring awareness to that fact and be accessible for in-person questions?

I am a parent who is rightfully concerned about academic performance and will continue to ask questions. Should I be elected to the Board of Education, I will not only ask questions but will listen to everyone, even Mr Reynolds. Too many parents feel unwelcomed to raise their concerns, discouraged by those who criticize them for questioning what goes on. I am running to be a voice for them.

Please know that I wholeheartedly support the teachers here in Newtown. I have advocated for them and sent multiple letters of praise and recognition to the school principal, Board of Education, as well as our superintendent. My children’s teachers have attended their birthday parades, sporting events, and have gone above and beyond before and during the pandemic.

If Mr Reynolds knew me, which he doesn’t, he would know this.

It is my sincere belief that the readers of The Newtown Bee are intelligent, discerning people who can see through these sorts of election season dramatizations. I hope that they will do their research, make an informed decision, and if they have any questions, contact me directly; after which I believe and hope they will choose to vote for our team.

Thank you.
