Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For information about programs offered, call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is $1 each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*There will not be any classes on October 13 and 14 due to the Harvest Bazaar.

*Annual Harvest Bazaar open house preview is Thursday, October 13, 5 to 7 pm. Regular hours are Friday and Saturday, October 14 and 15, 9 am to 4 pm; and Sunday, October 16, 9 am to noon. Come do some early holiday shopping. Included will be afghans, quilts, pillows, table runners, wall hangings, hand painted items, adult, children and infant hats, mittens and scarves, jewelry, Halloween, Thanksgiving and holiday decorations and ornaments, baked goods, and an array of other goodies. White elephant room has many new items still in original boxes.

*Flu clinics will be open on Tuesdays, October 18, 9 am to noon and October 25, 9 to 11 am. Bring your Medicare card. No reservations are needed.

*Bingo will be Wednesday, October 19, 1 pm.

Upcoming Programs

*Halloween Bash and bingo is Thursday, October 27, at 1 pm. Costumes A Must! Join in and enjoy some ghoulish treats.

*The center is looking for a craft teacher for the months of November and December. If interested call the center.

 

Day Trips

*Halloween Bash at the Inn at Villa Bianca on Wednesday, October 26, includes an all-you-can-eat family-style luncheon, a complementary drink ticket, and a free gift. Costumes are welcome, listen to fun Halloween music and watch magical entertainment. Bus departs at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool. Cost is $29.95.

*Visit the 9/11 Memorial in New York City on November 15. A family-style luncheon at the famous Italian restaurant Carmine’s is followed by a tour of the memorial. Depart at 8:45 am; cost is $74.

*Mohegan Sun Casino bus trip on Thursday, November 10, includes $15 food coupon and three $5 free bets. Depart at 8 am; cost is $30.

*Thanksgiving Celebration at the Inn at Villa Blanca on Monday, November 21, includes family-style luncheon, live music for your listening entertainment, a complimentary drink ticket and a gift upon arrival. Bus departs at 10:30 am, but you are welcome to carpool. Cost is $29.95.

Overnight Trips

Cruising the islands: Honolulu, Oahu; Hilo, Hawaii; Kona, Hawaii; and Nawiliwili, Kauai, on the Pride of America, November 3–13. Additional information will be published in later issues or details are available at the center.

Tuesday: 10 am, Cards for Troops; 10:30 am, line dancing; noon, lunch; 2 pm, tai chi and ice cream trip; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Wednesday: 10:30 am, exercise; noon, lunch; 2:15 pm: Bridges.

Thursday: noon, lunch; 1 pm, Scrabble and yoga.

Friday: 9 am, Mah Jongg; 10:30 am, quilting; 10:30 am, exercise; noon: knit or crochet; 2 pm, Zumba Gold; 3 pm, chair yoga.

Other items available at any time are: Wii (bowling, tennis, baseball, golf), pool table, ping pong table, card table and various board games.

 

Menu For Week Of

October 17–21

Monday: Fresh baked ham with gravy, orzo pilaf, summer spring vegetable mix, dinner roll, applesauce.

Tuesday: Onion soup with crackers, cheese stuffed shells with marinara sauce, tossed salad with tomato and Italian dressing, garlic bread, pineapple

Wednesday: Crab cake with tarter sauce OR hamburger on bun with ketchup, mashed sweet potato, broccoli, wheat bread, peanut butter cookie, grape juice.

Thursday: Spinach quiche, zucchini and tomato blend, diced squash, oat bread, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, October 24: Oven fried chicken quarter, macaroni and cheese, green beans, wheat roll, oatmeal raisin cookie.

Tuesday, October 25: Pork with fruit salsa, rice pilaf, cucumber salad, whole wheat bread, berry vanilla yogurt, pineapple juice.
