Protecting Privacy Rights

To the Editor:

Two recent events involving the public’s right to open government and the apparent use of personal information for private and political gain are of major concern. I am co-chairman of the Newtown Economic Development Commission but write as a 54-year Newtown resident, not in my EDC role.

Bruce Walczak, chair of the Independent Party of Newtown and candidate for Legislative Council, recently requested a copy of the contact information (e-mail addresses and phone numbers) used by the EDC to connect with business establishments. This list was created by the EDC by asking individuals if we could use their personal info as part of our efforts to help Newtown and its businesses thrive.

Mr Walczak claimed his right to the EDC list under the state’s Freedom of Information Act. I protested that release but was overruled on the basis that the town had to comply. Now I’m told that Mr Walczak is to use that information for personal gain through his relocation services. As the former editor of two state newspapers and a strong supporter when the FOI Act was put into force, it was never our intention that the law would be used for anything but open government.

Recently, we have learned in the media that Mr Walczak has broadened his quest for personal information via the FOI Act. He seeks the contact information provided by Newtowners under the News and Announcements service of the town. Residents register for messages related to Parks and Recreation cancellations, board agendas, general announcements about community events, and the like. I believe the IPN chairman now has a political motivation — an opportunity to spread messages espousing the IPN platform, candidates, and the like.

We also read that the first selectman will not release that information and will challenge any FOI ruling that declares she must do so. Mrs Llodra should be praised for protecting our privacy rights, and I have offered to support her position if she testifies before state officials.

I close by suggesting that Newtown voters show Mr Walczak that we will not tolerate the disrespect he has shown for our community. It is time to end his political career.
