Dynamite Performance In Youth Soccer Tourney
The U11 Newtown Dynamites girlsâ soccer team played in the Rocky Hill Columbus Day Tournament this past weekend and finished in second place. The girls opened with a 2-0 win over Glastonbury. The first goal was scored in the second half by Lauren Carrino on a penalty kick. The tide then turned, with the Dynamites stepping up offensive pressure behind the work of Jenna Lavelle and Katie Sailer. Brooke Antous then crossed the ball to Lindsay Merrifield who scored.
In the second game, the girls played host Rocky Hill and won 6-1. The home team struck first, but it was soon answered with a goal by Brooke Antous who got the assist from Lindsay Merrifield. In the second half, the girls came alive with three goals within a few minutes, two by Katie Sailer and another by Lindsay Merrifield. Audrey Benson and Grace Corcoran were both aggressive on defense. Kristen Cirone took advantage of a loose ball, knocking it in the net, and Lauren Adams sealed the win with the gameâs final goal.
The Dynamites opened the second day of the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Garden City, NY. The girls were held to minimal shots by the New York team and Lauren Carrino and Kristen Cirone had some great saves in goal.
In the final game of the tournament, the Dynamites earned a 3-0 win over Colchester. Defenders Grace Corcoran and Audrey Benson refused to let their opponents near their goal. The Colchester goalie was barraged with many Newtown shots with Keeley Kortze finding the back of the net first. Rebecca Gavel and Lu Hage were also tough on offense. The Dynamites continued the attack in the second half with goals by Katie Sailer and Lauren Carrino.
