Raptor-Watching Through Four Seasons

WOODBURY –– Western Connecticut Bird Club President Larry Fischer will present a slide program titled “In Search Of Raptor” at the club’s October meeting, which takes place on Thursday, October 20, at the First Congregational Church of Woodbury. There is a social gathering at 6:30 pm, and the meeting begins at 7. Meetings are usually over by 8:30.

Mr Fischer, a longtime Newtown resident, is a federal and state licensed raptor bander. He is a regular volunteer for the Nature Conservancy as well as other conservation organizations, serving as leader and guide during natural history and bird walks.

He has presented slide programs for bird clubs, Audubon societies, libraries, and garden clubs throughout New England and the Northeast. At the invitation of the Linnaean Society of New York, he has been a popular speaker at the American Museum of Natural History.

Area bird enthusiasts will enjoy hearing Mr Fischer recount the highlights of his past year spent in the pursuit of birds of prey. His talk and accompanying slides will proceed from fall hawk trapping to winter owl banding to spring nest searches and kestrel banding, and, lastly, summer tree climbing to raptor nests for the purpose of banding nestlings. Also featured prominently will be the beautiful forests, fields, lakes and rivers of western Connecticut.

“In Search Of Raptor” is a free program open to the public. The First Congregational Church of Woodbury is d at 214 Main Street, South. From Newtown, take Exit 15 off I-84 at Southbury and follow Route 6 into Woodbury. Just past the traffic light at the junction of Route 317, look for LaBonne’s Market on the left. Parking is available around the back and to the right. The meeting takes place in the Fellowship Hall of the church (side entrance).

The Western Connecticut Bird Club is a nonprofit organization devoted to promoting the pleasure of bird watching. The club meets the third Thursday of the month from September to April (ordinarily at the Southbury Public Library, which is now undergoing renovation).
