Hilkka S. Riutta, 84, of Sandy Hook died October 11 at Masonicare at Newtown. Mrs Riutta was the wife of Erro Riutta. She was born in Viipuri, Finland, January 31, 1931, and was a daughter of the late Hilda Maria and Alferd Pynninen.

In her early years, Mrs Riutta was a gymnast. A resident of Newtown for 61 years, Mrs Riutta was a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church.

In addition to her husband, survivors include a brother, Kauko Pynninen, and his wife Ela, of Finland; a daughter-in-law, Holly Witzgall of Northfield, N.H.; a grandson, Patrick Riutta; and several nieces and nephews in Finland. A son, Paul Riutta, predeceased Mrs Riutta.

Funeral services will be take place Thursday, October 15, at noon, in the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, with the Reverend Gregory Wismar officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home after 11 am, prior to the service. Interment will follow in Newtown Village Cemetery, Elm Drive.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the charity of choice.
