Nearly 30 teams with some 350 players from Connecticut and New York descended on Treadwell Park last weekend for the second annual Newtown Fall 7-on-7 Lacrosse Tournament and Newtown teams fared well against some of top name area programs.

In the Senior Division, John Jay came away the big winner with each of its two entered teams winning their respected groups as both of the Newtown 7th/8th grade teams took third place in their division.
The Newtown Gold team was lead by midfielders Kyle Vignone, Thomas Murphy, Connor Halloran and Scott Wexler, attackers Connor Byrne and Connor Ryan and defenders Jeremy Schaniel, Colin Cinder, and Eric Johnson. The Golds eventually fell to Ridgefield in the quarterfinals after impressive wins in pool play against Cheshire, Brookfield, and Redding/Easton.
Newtown Blue got excellent play from goalie Brandon Body, defenders Max Nacewicz and Sean Maher, midfielders Ryan Korth, Dan Sclafani and Colby Summerlin and attackers Mike Zacarro, Will Northrop, and Lewis Thompson. The Blues got through pool play to the quarterfinals (where they eventually lost to Fairfield) with a tie against a tough Weston team and wins against Bethel and New Fairfield.
The Seventh Grade division was a battle between Newtown, Wilton, RELAX and Fairfield. Fairfield emerged victorious with an impressive win over Wilton in the final. Justin Spath was excellent in goal for the Sevens as Trey Trudell, Justin Brophy, Michael Lord and Colin Morris hustled and made great plays in the field.
Wins against Fairfield, Bethel, Weston, and Redding/Easton coupled with a tie against Ridgefield to give a solid and inspired Newtown Junior team first place in its Group and a bye through to the semifinals. The goaltending of Evan Isaacs, the defensive strength of James Marusi and Jack Kearny, the hustle of midfielders Dan Hebert, Stefan Dullinger, and Pat Cappoziello, and some great finishing on attack by Graham Derrickson, Tom Bauer, Cody Ryan. The Juniors kept things close on the semifinal against John Jay, but ultimately succumbed despite a strong effort.
The event was made possible by the contributions of over 50 volunteers â Newtown youth lacrosse parents and friends and also Newtown youth lacrosse alumni now playing in high school.
